Flyer goes to school

Thank you, he's just starting brick work and keeping 2 paws on is the new criteria.

He's attentive and willing, and if I have that, I'll have a wonderful partner in dog sport!

he sure looks like he is paying attention to you:yes:

so how does one start this brickwork? Destin hasn't had any start at heeling/obedience training.......

I started with luring him to put his paws up on the brick, then i would step toward his side to get him to move out of my way - treating and praising when he would move and keep his front feet up on the brick. He is rotating all the way around much sooner than my other dogs, I think it is because I'm better at manipulating the treat than I was with my other dogs....

I'm trying to do it the Celeste Meade way, she has free you-tube on training it at her website, americank9country.com

Once he is going all the way around (without my body) then I add my body and keep him in line with my hip (seam of my pants) and praise and reward proper postion. Once this is fluid - we work in the other direction. I use "get in" for him pivoting to the right, and "off" for pivioting to the left to move away (clockwise)

For the heeling, I like Denise Frenzi's "pocket hand" which is a variation on Celeste Meade's 'nose bridge'

Denise can guide her Tervs with two fingers on the side of the dogs muzzle - to the left, right and around. I hope I will get that with Flyer, maybe not though - he could be my first "in size" sheltie!

Justus has a nose touch, but mostly we use it for getting up into heel positon, and a fun attention game before the judge calls the exercise to begin.

Denise Fenzi has a great blog, she includes many video's in it. :)

excellent:yes:
I see I have some reading/watching to do....

I have been a little concerned with teaching Destin as he is so much shorter than the others....... it's hard to get the cookie in the right place:winkgrin:

Thanks, baby sheltie brains are the best! They are little sponges that soak up so much, so quickly!

Flyer is doing baby go-outs, everything except he still has zero retrieve instinct. This will be my challenge, but I'm sure by the time he's two he will have a solid competition ready retrieve! (or I'll just do agility... ;D)
