Foundations for agility exercises (video!)

I made a (dorky!) video for a friend and thought I would share it. I have a lot of people ask me what some good exercises are for dogs just starting agility, or even puppies who will do agility in the future.

These are just a couple things that I found extremely helpful over the years with my two dogs. Of course it doesn't cover everything, and it does require some pre-obedience stuff (refer to Dani's list!) like stays/comes/being able to work off leash, etc...

But, these are the things that we did with Lexi since she was a baby, and I think it helped her significantly.

Things covered: Revving up your dog, restrained recall, call to lead hand, lead hand work (outside circles), target training, how to use varying rewards, and an introduction to obstacle/handler focus.

Hope it helps someone! And feel free to share it if you can think of anyone else who might use it.

I don't think it's dorky. I liked it and thought it provided some useful information. There were a few things that I didn't know. Plus, you had some adorable models. Lexi is so cute and smaller than I thought.

From a production perspective...I would tighten up your cuts. Especially in the beginning. Like when you finish your demonstration and there's a few seconds of you walking over to the camera or when you confirm the camera is rolling. Your video will flow better if you have tighter cuts.
I'd also add a few more subtitles. Specifically, when the wind hits the microphone or the central air unit is a little loud. When this happened, you were hard to understand... or that could just be me being a clueless agility newbie. :biggrin2:
Sorry, I tend to notice these type of things that most wouldn't care about. I hope I didn't offend you.

Haha nope! Not offended at all. I honestly just took each video, put them together, and saved with captions so that there was a separate "section" for each. Next time I'll clean it up more. I wasn't even anticipating sharing it with anyone other than my friend, but when I watched it I thought it might help others.

Phew...glad you weren't offended! The reason why I posted some criticism is because I think you have the potential to produce great beginner-agility instructional web videos. I can't tell you how many times I've searched for videos of front/rear crosses and other agility training. I never found anything good. They don't explain the steps clearly, the editing is jumpy and and the audio is usually awful. I found one that was good, but it was shot about 30 feet away. You could barely see the person.

I think you could do a much better job than 90% of the stuff out there.

Wow Ashley! This was a great video. I love it. I am going to show my daughter who is just starting up with Dandie so that she can get some ideas. I really liked this! Thanks so much for sharing it with us.

new career for Ashley?
Hey, if I thought there was a market for it!

I'm glad you liked it! It was fun making it.

love your videos, I wish I was that talented.

You are! Keep in mind I've been doing this for a couple years now, so I've learned a little here and there! And my dogs have done this a bunch, too, so they make me look good
