George Alston Handling Seminar

Has anyone ever gone to one of these? I'm considering signing up to the one coming to Troy, problem is I'd have to borrow one of my friends dogs as mine won't be a year old yet.

I did one years ago... Like any seminar, you're going to learn some things that are really useful, and some that just aren't. Bear in mind that George Alston was primarily a Working/Sporting handler. Herding breeds (especially small ones) are not really his cup of tea, and he likes to see the Shelties and Collies be hard-stacked.

He also has a sort of bombastic, loud, make-jokes-at-others'-expense sort of manner - which I know some people are fine with, but which really turned me off (but I have a thin skin).

He wrote a really good book (http://www.amazon.com/Winning-Edge-Secrets-Howell-reference/dp/0876058349) that I would definitely recommend - his dog/human sports psychology stuff is excellent.

I'm not one for seminar unless they give live examples. I don't like to be preached at. I can get that on the internet.

I would save my money

The idea behind the seminar is so he can point out your particular handling flaws and fix em. But I think your right, I'll probably save my money.

I've also heard that about George Alston. But I will say if you ever have a chance to take an Anne Bowes seminar, run, do not walk, to sign up. In fact, if you're starting a club, you might consider having her come and do one. She's based in Massachusetts and will travel. My first handling lesson was one of her seminars more than a year ago. It was the best day ever. She is a Corgi breeder and also a Sheltie judge. If you're looking to learn handling, or just to hone your skills, she is fabulous.

Ohh, I'll keep that in mind and bring it up at next weeks meeting.

If you do want to investigate having Anne, PM me and I'll give you her contact information. I can't recommend her highly enough. She is also a very down-to-earth, funny and understandable teacher, so the segments she spends speaking at her seminar are riveting, when you aren't laughing so hard you're crying. I have copious notes from the day I spent with her, and I refer to them often.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind but I'll have to put it past everyone else before I really look into it. Since we are just starting out our main focus is on reaching akc Approval, which is rather a pain in the butt. We almost have the number of people but now we need to get some kind of fun show so we can be approved for B rank matches.
