Getting started in herding?

How do I get started in AKC herding? Hunter has his CD in obedience already and we are continuing in Open Obedience but, I am interested in starting him in Herding. I *think* he has the right stuff (instinct/drive).
How do I get him tested? (Is that the right place to start or does he need lessons 1st?) I can't seem to find many (if any!) local Herding Tests on the AKC events listings.
Someone help a herding newbie out? :confused2:

It seems that the UKC has a lot more opportunities for herding tests & trials than the AKC... at least, in my neck of the woods. I've been thinking about herding, too, once my ankle-biter's reached maturity. It might be worth joining UKC to take advantage of those opportunities?
 
That is a great list that Jessica posted. May we ask the general vicinity where you are located?

Dave, UKC does not have a herding venue, unfortunately. Sometimes you will see herding instinct tests at ukc shows. In southern Ohio you could look up Claudia Frank.


I had to chuckle at the 'fast' Chris. I have spent *years* and tons of $$$ working on getting rid of the fast :winkgrin:
 
So I've since learned. I've already run across Claudia's name elsewhere & filed it away for later. Thanks for the input :smile2:
 
I took my two to a herding instinct thing a couple of years ago...
It was very interesting!!
The sheep didn't take Clancy very seriously..he did alot of barking...but he listened to me and did what was asked...
Abby went right to it...she was charging them and running wide to keep them together..the sheep went were she chased them..but..she wouldn't listen to me..at all!! The tester said she'd take Clancy any day over Abby...even tho he couldn't make them sheep take him serious!! LOL
We never persued lessons or anything..just did this for fun...
