Greek Yogurt

Is Greek yogurt good for puppies? I have been letting Lacey clean out the small container after I am done. It's just a small amount and she loves it. She sits and waits for me to give it to her. Then she licks the remainder up.

I give my boys a little yogurt in their kibble every day. It's a probiotic, just as good for them as us.

This is right from PetMD

Deliciously plain yogurt is a healthy treat for your dog. Just as with humans, the live acidophilus in the yogurt keeps the good bacteria in your dog's intestines in balance, so that bad bacteria is swiftly knocked out. If your dog is on antibiotics, a little yogurt will also help keep yeast infections at bay (a common side-effect of antibiotic treatment). You can also give your dog acidophilus pills -- wrapping the pills in bacon is strictly optional.

Puppies are especially prone to yeast infections, so a little plain yogurt as a snack (or even dessert) can help keep things in balance; especially useful while the intestinal system is building immunities.

I eat the yogurt with fruit in it but by the time she gets it there is very little left.

The best kind has live culture. I would give small amounts, as most dogs are lactose intolerant after weaning.

Most of the fruit they put in yogurt is okay for dogs, but if it's lo-cal yogurt, i'd be concerned about the artificial sweeteners.

Koko is nutso for yogurt. If there's something I want him to eat and he doesn't like it--yogurt makes it all go down with a sheltie smile.

I gave Zulu a little Greek yogurt in his kibble every day, but it gave him runny poops. Now he gets it as a treat when we have it, and the poop is back to normal.

I don't use Greek yogurt (although I admit I'm not sure what the difference is between that and regular yogurt) but I do give each one a kong frozen with regular lowfat organic yogurt every night after dinner. Heaven help me if the clock chimes 8 and the kongs aren't out! They're like sharks circling... :uhoh:

Greek yogurt is just regular yogurt pressed to remove some liquid whey and make it thicker, but the process also yields lower glucose and lactose per ounce than regular. Of course since it's more dense there is more protein and fat per ounce as well. As far as active cultures, they are the same for both. Oh, and Greek is more expensive.

Thanks for the yogurt info! Good to know. I'll stick with my plain old non-Greek less fatty and less expensive stuff. I don't think the pups care.
