Grinding teeth

My boy, Casanova, is an adorable 1.5 year old bi-blue but he does this weird teeth grinding thing.
He'l rest his cheek agaainst something and then chew on his cheek/grind his teeth.
Is this normal? Why is he doing this?

It increases if he's excited or bored.

Oh oh oh! Mine does this too (sable). I've always thought he was the only one. His "bite" is a bit narrow, he has a few crooked incisors because of crowding so I thought it was because of that. He gets hyper and will go up to the edge if a chair or side of my passenger seat in the car and "pretend" to chew. When I examine the corner, it's not even wet. No idea what kind of behavior this is-is your dog's teeth crowded at all?
 
Shelby does this to our hands when she plays. When she was younger she would scrape her front teeth on everything including the cement porch. She also "clicks" her teeth at you when she is excited or wants something. She also has an underbite and her front teeth are crowded. When she clicks at you, you can hear her back teeth grinding so I know she is definitely crowded. The vet has already warned us that she will probably need to have some front teeth pulled eventually.
 
April does this too. She knows that it annoys me, and she'll come up to me, and intentionally do it when she's displeased at the amount of attention she's getting. I growl at her to stop, and then do something with her to get her satisfied, and that's that. Until the next time.
