hello I am considering getting a sheltie and I understand you have to brush them a few hours a week but so they get mats? Like my border collie gets mats on the back of her legs so I was just wondering if sheltie a are the same thanks everyone

If I had to brush my four Shelties a few hours a week, I wouldn't have any time to eat!!! No, I do a brushing about every week or so on mine. Mine only get mats behind their ears once in a while. Now that it's summer, they sometimes come back with those little green burs in their full, bt those brush right out.

Of course, any long haired breed can develop mats, but if you make sure their fur is clear weekly, you should be fine.

I don't brush my Shelties a few hours a week. I do a once-a-week good, all-over grooming. Once a day or every other day I just spritz their coats and pass a pin brush through them quickly. That takes minutes. Nails get trimmed every two weeks. They will get mats if you don't give them a thorough grooming regularly. Check for places that mat, such as behind legs and ears. In that respect, they aren't much different than Border Collies. If you keep up with grooming, it's really not bad.

Each dog of mine gets about 10 minutes grooming once to twice a week. It's all about the tool. A good pin cushion brush without balled tips and a shedding rake (not blade or fuminator) will make quick work of things. I also have a thinning shears and I thin the pants / butt / behind the ears a bit. We don't show so that's OK to do. I also am blessed with relatively light coated dogs. Melli is short plush like an Aussie and Cubby does not have a lot of cottony undercoat.

We brush ours once a week and the only mats they get is behind the ears. And it's usually about an hour for all four. Not an hour a piece, but an hour total.

I like grooming so i groom more than needed. I have. A 45-60 minute groom every week (when i had babies i got by with bi-weekly or even every three weeks with a newborn) and quicker fluff up brushes in between (5 -15 minutes and not wvery day as adults). With a puppy I do more often for trainging purposes , aiming for daily, but for much shorter time amounts due to coat needs and attention span. I personally do a everyother week trim (ears, feet, body shaping, etc). Did i mention i like grooming? That isnt a necessity other than nails. Puppies seem to have more soft fur around ears that can mat. My current dog still has a lot at almost one and under arms and behind ears tangle easiest. Both my dogs have had coarser and thicker coats of fur. Durng shedding season (1-2 twice a year) i do brush daily but that actually saves more time that way. And no matts.

Brush once a week (usually 30 mins is enough) with a rake comb (I like the pin combs too but the rake seems to work best for me) and a bath/shave between her toes once a month. Nice and soft, fluffy, and no matting or smell (other sheltie owners I know are always raving about how Shelties don't smell if kept groomed) and I almost never have sheltie hair floating in the air unless I've just given her a bath and am attempting to blow dry her. My Avatar image is her first brushing with a full coat....I could stuff a sofa with all that hair.
