Halloween Herding

so my dog club had a herding fun day on Halloween- cheap arena rental
so Cran already has seen sheep and ducks- he loves herding sheep. He really couldn't wait until it was his turn. we need lots of practice- I need to learn how to teach him the things that he needs to learn to do a good job.

Well, I took Dixie in first- didn't think we'd be in there long. While she's not as BC-obsessed with sheep as Cran is, she wasn't afraid and did want to run around them. She did pretty good with the ducks too once she saw them in their enclosure. so now I have two herding dogs.....

I had tied them away from the gate since a friend wanted me to video her dog herding. I hadn't even gotten to the gate with the camera when all of a sudden, there was a sheltie at my feet- Dixie had slipped her harness somehow- it was still laying on the ground by Cran- all still attached- except to her :(
but at least she came running to me and not away or to any of the other dogs, people, etc

so hopefully we'll be visiting sheltie school and then heading to the real herding place in a couple weeks......

oh- no pix of my pups herding

Lucky you (and your dogs) that you have somewhere like that close by!! I often think that I'd love to Miko somewhere with ducks and/or sheep... but I don't know of anywhere like that around here.

I'm sure your dogs had a TON of fun... and next time, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeze take pics!!!

well, it's hard to take pix when you're in the arena with the dogs and the sheep. I needed to get someone to take them for me- just didn't work out to get them.

the reason that we got to do this is a local trial coming up (local being 3-4 hours) has been relocated from a farm type place to an arena so some of our club members that plan to compete there thought it would be good to practice in that type of environment. so one of our club members trucked her sheep (4-5) to the arena and another member brought her ducks so we could practice on both. so not really a common thing at all. and we won't be going to this trial because it's in mid-Dec and we'll be in PA for the holidays by then. so maybe in the spring if we can learn enough and the trial gets scheduled when we can go, maybe we'll enter
