My trainer went to recent one of the last seminars in US of John Rogerson where he was testing dogs on retrieve. Handler threw their shoe on the course and if dog did not retrieve it, handler had to finish tracking course barefooted:lol:
So we practiced this in class. We passed:biggrin2:
Che will retrieve almost anything, including shoes. Now I have not tried retrieving big marrow bone yet. How is your bone retrieve? Any takers for challenge?

it is one of the tapes submitted for recallers 3.0,

I'm almost scared to encourage Lexi to put my shoes in her mouth!

Not sure if she'd bring it back or not, I am curious. She will retrieve any toy, moving or stationary EXCEPT the holy roller. She hated that thing and never wanted to pick it up and bring it back.

Miko only retrieves things that are "his". I think if I threw a shoe he'd probably just stare at me like I'd lost my mind. :wink2:

I imagine that if I threw a bone, he'd go get it and keep going!!! No way would he bring THAT to ME!!

Justice will retrieve anything.

Shoes, metals bowls, pieces of paper, pens, highlighters, books, remotes, toys, bullysticks, hotdogs, string cheese(last 2 were proofing). I don't doubt that he would bring back a bone.

1 day I dropped my mouse on the ground and the cover popped of the back. Justice retrieved the mouse and then the cover for me.

Another day at my parents house, my mom threw all the shoes in a big pile on the rug by the door about 10 people's worth. We were getting ready to leave and I asked where all the shoes were and my mom say in that pile. I told Justice "find my shoes" and he ran to the pile and grabbed one of my shoes and brought it to me. My mom was amazed but thought he just got lucky as it was on the edge. So I had her hide the other one deep in the pile and sent Justice for it. He got to the pile and dug though the shoes and came out with my shoe and brought it to me. :biggrin2:

Justice was a natural retriever. I really didn't need to teach he to retrieve, I just encouraged it. My girls neither one is a natural retrieve. Ember was a 6 month project just to get her to take something from my hand. She will retrieve "obedience" objects and that is it. Remember this is the dog that doesn't play with toys.:rolleyes2:

Diva took me over 9 months to teach the retrieve(starting from a baby). She is a great retriever now. But I don't know if she would bring back things like shoes or not. SHe has shown interest but when she tries Justice will rush in from where ever he is and grab the object away from her and bring it to me.

I think retrieve is the one of most important things to teach a dog. It is easiest way to teach a dog to share if dog has tendency to guard.
Che was not a natural retriever but he was and is naughty puppy... With Che I did a lot of capturing as he naturally wanted to take everything in his mouth, unless it was something like knife, I would just ask to retrieve in my hand, pens, papers, keys, shoes, etc. Leo is natural retriever so with him as long as he is aroused to the right state, retrieving is not an issue- I will tug on the object and then throw it and sure he will bring it back....
John Rogerson encourages to teach retrieve with $1 bills, then switch to $20- the more important it is to you the better you going to do it:biggrin2:

You reminded me of teaching Ember to take things. Here is a picture of her at 6 months.

Ok she might be better than I thought but with Justice around nobody else gets a chance. That is unless I lock him up.

Nice job Ember, awesome retrieve! I guess this is only a problem if you are at someone else's home!

I am struggling with teaching Brie to retrieve, she loves to chase the ball but just flicks it in the air and then runs back to me! I'm not quite sure how I get around this when she won't even pick up and hold the ball.

Justice sounds exactly like Starr! He'll retrieve anything...in the photo below we were at the lake. I had put all of my gear on the rocks, and I was watching my other dog in the water when I felt him nudging my arm....he obviously thinks I'm not complete without my blackberry!
