Healthy Weight?

It's hard to tell without feeling the ribs, but I'd say she looks better than fine, she's beautiful.

I can still feel her ribs, but not prominantly enough to count each one. I thinking she's fine. I'm just going to try to give her a little more exercise since the weather is nice. That's really the biggest change since leaving Florida. In Florida the weather is always condusive to a walk, plus I had a huge fenced yard. Both she and I need the exercise, so we're just going to have to get out there more!

She is a beautiful dog--looks to be built similarly to my dog, Bentley. He is exactly 15" and weighs 20 lbs. A few months back he got up to 24 lbs (eek! Prior to agility) and we cut back on his food, and started agility, and he's down to 20. Our vet said the ideal weight for him is around 19-21 lbs.

I think she looks pretty good as well. Looking at the top-down picture, I don't see an outward bulge. And one of the other shots shows a definite upward curve line from her chest to her hind quarters.

Just keep an eye on her. She does appear to be fine boned, so too much weight would be very bad for her.

She's a very pretty girl, btw!

If they were all prominant she would probably be underweight. In most breeds its the last two ribs you want to feel without much fat - but if she has a heavy undercoat you need to take this in to account. My vet also feels the shoulders and butt to ensure they do not have a layer of fat in this area as he says that is a better way to judge a very heavy coated dog.

Thank you everyone. I really do appreciate your comments. Because Meggie is on the smaller side, I'm really consious of her weight. My cat is a chunk-a-dunk and has diabetes. I don't want that happening to my baby as well.
