Heartworm preventative for puppy

The mosquitos are bad here, we are having daily rain and I can't remember them ever being quite this pesky. I gave Flyer his first heartworm tablet already. Here it is a year round medication.

I started Ruutu on heartworm medicine when he was 8 weeks old. We did it year round in NC and doing it year round in PA as well as per his breeder (who is also a vet).

How nice to have a breeder that is a vet! Great resource for you in the lifetime of your pup!

Good to know that others start on heartworm so early too...

Cubs went on at 9 weeks -- and it was a help as he had worms too :ick

We had already done the MDR1 test and were known normal/normal.

I have never had a dog on heartworm medication. Now flea meds yes, but need to find out how old they need to be for that.

definitely! She's the one that told me to start it ASAP on Ruutu. I'm sure our next one will be on it as soon as s/he comes home.

Judy? You've never had to use HW med? Wow. That's So Cal for you! Central Cal is odd. Bakersfield rarely sees cases, Fresno some, Sacramento has a problem, and way North CA you can guess how many shelter dogs are HW positive.

We like Heartgard because it also is a monthly general wormer. Never know what you pick up out there in the world.

Cubby is already on flea/tick too. Because we go to the mountains, I choose Advantix II because it repels as well as kills. Nothing more disturbing than camping and looking over to see a mosquito just sucking away on the tip of the dog's nose. At times that can be here but we haven't had the rain to do it.

I'll check with the vet when we go next week. We have always used a flea preventative. Thenfirst of the month is flea meds day for Milo. It's easier if they are on the same schedule with meds.
