Hello and question

Hello I have a 6 month old sheltie named Sabre that has been extremely heathly since we got him in August. About a month ago he went through a half hour period were he couldn't walk on our kitchen floor and his front legs would give out and hed faceplant, then get up and act all weird. After he would get up he would try to sit and his back right legs would give out. Then after like 2 minutes he was fine... It just happened again but this time it was a little longer and it seemed as if he was acting all loopy as if he didn't know what was going on but he knew where he was.
Sorry if this was posted in the wrong section but figured I would say hello and post a question at the same time..

Hi Derek, and welcome to the forum! I'm going to answer this here, but we can continue further discussion in health. Unfortunately, it sounds to me as if your puppy had a mild seizure. I have one who started having them also as a very small puppy, at about four months. She did exactly what you described...would lose her equilibrium and balance and if I didn't pick her up she would fall right over. She is three now and on holistic medication and her seizures are infrequent and fairly mild, but you should definitely have your vet check the puppy out.

The protocol most vets follow is to put dogs with epilepsy on phenobarbitol, which is a very strong drug. I opted to wait before doing that since the seizures were mild. There are others on this forum who also have dogs with seizures. I've learned that Shelties can be prone to them.

There is also no test to diagnose canine epilepsy. It's more a process of elimination. But the symptoms are pretty telling and your vet should be able to make a diagnosis. If it happens again, I'd pick the puppy up and just hold him until he is normal again. That seems to give my Pixie comfort and keeps her from hurting herself.

Ann's suggestion is excellent and most likely the right answer, but I'm going to give you another one for consideration....much to my great embarrassment! :rolleyes2:

I have a teenage son at home, who smokes pot. I came home from work one day with Bacca was just little - maybe 4 months? - and he was acting weird. Staggering and swaying. I let him outside and he collapsed on the ground and just stared up at the clouds. I called him in and he was still not normal.

Brought him to emergency and had his stomach pumped. He had ingested some of my son's pot! The poor pup was stoned! Next morning, he woke up and he could have eaten an entire horse! Yep, he had the munchies!

I can laugh now, but it was terrifying at the time.

All to say, if your pup is acting weird, don't wait. At 6 months, your pup is probably into chewing everything. Some may be poison. Get him to the vet ASAP. You never know what could be causing it.
 
Welcome to the Forum, Derek. Six months ago, my Sheltie, Spencer, had his first Grand Mal seizure when he was two years old. Because he had a second shortly thereafter, the Vet wanted him started on meds. We've done some changes in the dosage of the meds and have added some additional meds and we seem to have more control over the situation now.:yes: It would be a good idea to call your Vet and explain what has happened with Sabre and ask his/her advice. Even if Sabre does have canine epilepsy, there are many things you can do so the pup can have a long and happy life!
 
Welcome! I hope you will figure out what happened with Sabre. I hope that it was an isolated incident, but I would go and get in checked like the others suggested.
 
Welcome, and best wishes that your vet soon identifies the problems. I agree with Ann -- sounds like a mild seizure. :(
