Hello from Brandy, Bandit, and I in Philly, PA

Welcome! Brandy is just precious and Bandit looks so happy to be sprung from the shelter. Congrats and thanks for giving Bandit a loving forever home.

I currently own my 4th Sheltie a Sable male named Hartley who just turned 8 mos. on the 19th.

Many thanks. Everyone is so kind here, and the Shelties are GORGEOUS! I found out the most likely reason his previous owners called him Bandit. He is a master escape artist. 8am I was running down my street, neighbors laughing and everything. He apparently loves car rides, because we got him when a neighbor opened her car door and said, "Wanna go for a ride?" He beelined to her. I have to do some research. A baby gate is too tedious before I can try and train him, so I may get a loose wire expandable tiny fence.

I have a 74 year old father, and he just simply cannot step over a baby gate. These pups keep us on our toes with different quirks, don't they? :lol:

Oh thank you, that is PERFECT! See, Bandit seems to have been raised by a male, or takes to males a tad better. My father used to raise and breed Shelties, and he gets stern---but not mean, and Bandit freaking stays while he's walking out the door! Yet, Bandit sleeps with me. Confusing. But this is only the what---third or fourth day?

respecting commands is different from lovin and snugglin :winkgrin:

Bandit can tell that your dad means what he says and since your dad has experience with shelties, he probably knows exactly how to say it :yes:

you need to practice more

I adopted Bandy (I have to stop calling him that, because of my other Sheltie with a similar name when I call him that named Brandy--and I get all confused!) at the Women's Humane Society. It's a wonderful place, because when I adopted him, I saw dogs in 15 minute intervals getting stretched out playing fetch, along with getting brushed.

You're absolutely correct. I'm having a lot of trouble with Bandit, because i'm dealing with a rescue rather than growing up with Brandy with her as a puppy. I did let out a stern "NO!" when Bandit escaped yesterday morning, and he ran behind the couch. I left it at that, because he knew what was wrong, and I didn't want to terrify him, just let him know that what he did was not acceptable. He's definitely just a kid with fur. I'm going to take a few training classes, along with reading up on the forums more. He sure gets enough running in a day. I take him for walks/runs to keep him in shape-- plus, that's what they need. Thank you very much for your advice!

Welcome! Brandy is beautiful and Bandit is so handsome! We have a baby gate from Walmart that we use for our computer room when Skyla was a pup and we needed to keep her in one room for house training. We still have it up for during her treat time to keep the other dogs from taking her treat from her. The gate has a push handle to open for people to walk thru =) Only $30 so super affordable!

Skyla is the same way with my husband and I. I have grown up with dogs my whole life, Skyla listens to me (I talk to her and use repeat words when we do something so she catches on), but doesnt listen when my husband says things to her (except for sit for a treat, she'll listen to him on that one! haha). I told my husband "use a higher pitched happy voice" lol.

Many thanks for the warm welcome! I started using a stern voice the other day, and Bandit is good at listening for the most part for a Sheltie in a new environment. He'll try sneaking up, but i've instilled in his head that he can't pass where the carpet turns to hardwood flooring less he's going for a "walk." I still have my eyes on gates, but everyone's warming up to one another for the time being.

Today, after HOW MANY DAYS? Bandit saw my Bearded Dragon, Zeus, in his Vivarium. He went psycho. So the lizard gets bath and room time for about 30-45 minutes while Bandit stays downstairs with my 74 year old dad. They all don't mind.

Everything is about observation and trying new things, right?
