Help with finding local breeders

I know this is old, but I thought I'd talk about how I found my pup.

First, I went to the ASSA website, and contacted the person who was listed for my area.

Second, I went to a couple of their meetings. Why? To MEET the breeders.

Thirdly, I asked for their cards, asked if they were going to breed or have any litters available in my time frame (which was 3-6 months, but I was willing to wait).

I started calling around, and y'know, most of them referred me to other breeders. The face-to-face meetings was the most important. At the local Sheltie club meeting, I saw and heard some breeders I didn't care for. I don't care if they bred the top dog. Their attitude wasn't what I wanted in a breeder.

Miko's breeder was referred to me. He was the runt of the litter, but I loved him immediately. The fact that the breeder seriously was crying when I took him home, touched me. 10 years later, I called her up, asked if she was still breeding. She wasn't, but her co-breeder had a litter. Three months later they ASKED ME if I wanted the boy puppy. The fact that they asked me, was a big honor. We went out there, met the dogs, all 10 of them. Met the pups. They all looked just like Miko. It was amazing.

My point to this story is that by meeting some great breeders, at meetings where they were very involved with, who gave me referrals.....made me feel that I made a great choice. Miko is far from perfect, but he was bought as a pet and nothing more. With a contract stating that. Koji is show quality, but he also is not to be used for breeding (which may be good, since he grew to an amazing 18").

Thanks for letting me tell my story. I'm proud of the way I went about it, and would do it again if I ever want another Sheltie (the breeders are done breeding, lol). Which I'm sure I will later.
 
Research, research, research! Thank God for the web! If I found a potential breeder, I would cross-reference the breeder's name to see where else the name came up - good or bad.

And networking! If I found a breeder that seemed to be reputable but had no pups available, I would ask for a recommendation. Most were willing to offer names of breeders. It's a pretty close knit community and most are interested in promoting not just themselves, but their peers.

And if you find a breeder you like, but they have no pups, look into the pedigrees of the pups they are showing, and check out those breeders.

By doing this, I've found at least 4 breeders in my immediate area that I didn't know existed. When I started the search for Bacca, I only knew of 1.

Also the Annual Dogs in Canada was a great resource too.

Thanks for your posting!! That's a really smart way to get to meet breeders. Thanks for sharing this, it's an ideal way especially if you have shows locally!!
