Hey everyone,
Got my first sheltie in 1995 - I found him in a shelter and he was on his last day there before being PTS. He actually picked me LOL ... I put a leash on him to see how he was and the little bugger marched right over to the door of my car and looked at me like "Let's GO !". How could I turn that down ? He was named Murphy before we left the parking lot and I just lost him before Christmas at about 16 1/2 yrs old. He was a wonderful boy and I miss him still.
Got my 2nd sheltie in 2004 from Sheltie Rescue NJ. Buddy was 3 when I got him and someone was not kind to him. He was a very high strung boy and didn't know what to do with that energy. ( I think he's actually sheltie/border collie). Raising your voice, raising a hand, even though it wasn't directed in him, caused him to drop to the ground, shake and pee himself. He was terrified of everyone. After lots of patience, understanding and love, he has gotten over almost all his issues - he is still funny about dogs he doesn't know. He still has his moments but seems so much more comfortable in his own skin. He is now 12 years old and a totally different dog.
After Murphy was gone, Buddy and I both missed having a 2nd dog in the house. I looked at the rescues, but with the issues Buddy has with other dogs, I thought my best bet would be a very young dog with no baggage who was well socialized. That's how I found Romeo. Romeo was very well sociallized and when I introduced them to each other, Buddy barked, Romeo ignored him, and they've gotten along well ever since.
I love Shelties, always have since I was a teenager. Their beauty, smarts, and happy personalities are hard to beat !
