Hopeful future owner

Sca tries to herd me by the back of the leg from time to time, I just stop when he does and he quits. Never hard though.

Don't just get a dog! This is a major commitment that hopefully lasts a long time. To inflict a dog on him is not good for you, him or most of all the dog.

I like the suggestions of bringing to the breeder. As much as I am 100% happy to have Sca and made the right choice there is a chance you need to get another breed. Having a happy household helps make a great dog :wink2:

This is such a personal decision that I would feel presumptuous giving advice. I can tell you that my own DH wasn't sure we "needed" another dog (DH, DS and I had Bear the Big Red Dog). When I explained that I really wanted a dog of my own (Bear was DS's) to give me the "holy card" look like Bear gave her, he finally understood and suggested we get a Sheltie. Now, with a Sheltie for everyone and one to share, we're blissfully happy as a four-Sheltie household.

Chris, thank you for the response. Sounds like it worked out well for your family! :smile2: I know it might sound like I was making an impulsive decision without taking anyone else into account, but truly I was trying to take all things into consideration. Which is partly why I decided to past on the Forum, to hopefully get some outside opinions.

Also ALL - I really appreciate everyone's input and opinion and I can see I definitely need to put a lot more time and consulting WITH my hubby before planning to bring a puppy into the family! Many thanks!!! :smile2:

When I decided that it was time for us to get a dog, I tried to get my ex-husbands input into the decision.

The first step was to get his agreement into getting a dog. I finally got a yes.

The second step was to get his agreement into what kind of dog. His only requirement was he did not want a great bit slurpy lab-type dog that would sweep the coffee table with his tail! He was a cat-person and we already had two cats.

I already knew the right answer....a Sheltie....sometimes cat-like in personality, not slurpy, small enough not to to obtrusive (Yeah right!).

And a Sheltie it was. He loved that dog, and even though he was "mine", even after we divorced, he still looked after Timber whenever I went away. I think he looked forward to it.

It's kinda the same with David. He's not a dog person either, but I keep catching him snuggling and smootching with the pups. Shelties, you just can't resist them! Period, end of story!

Because you're adopting a furkid!!

Welcome to the forum!!

You've picked a great breed but I'm sorry to hear your hubby isn't so keen on it. I guess you would have to respect that he's had a bad experience with (possibly) a sheltie. I'm not sure if it's worth telling him all dogs are different and while a strange dog might have bitten him, his own, probably wouldn't if brought up and trained well.

I got Romeo pretty much on impulse. Sort of. I knew I wanted another dog after my first one passed on, but I thought I couldn't deal with another sheltie and was kind of looking at other breeds. Of course, nothing clicked. Then fate intervened and I met Romeo. I think my other half reluctantly agreed because (a) I was stubborn; and (b) he somehow thought it would be my parents' dog. I don't know what gave him that idea! Hurhur! He wasn't very into the pup and there seemed to be some "distance" between him and Romeo. Now tho, he dotes on Romeo like crazy. He lets Romeo do EVERYTHING and calls himself Romeo's "papa". :rolleyes2: And guess what? We're now thinking of getting another puppy too! And where he previously never thought of having a sheltie and never particularly liked the breed, he now loooves them. Sometimes they just need a nudge in the right direction!
