House training on a schedule

Remember Judy, she is also a little behind though to having a slow start. She is probably more like 8 or 9 weeks. Keep at it. Cubby didn't really seem to be all together until 15 weeks and he has always been pretty advanced. I am just now starting to really trust him wandering around and had can alert when he needs it. Wouldn't put it past him if I ignore him though. Shay was solid at 5 months. Hang in there.

That is very true Cara. She is a smart one though. She did go to the pet door and went right by it, so she may be figuring it out on her own as well. She may be too little to use it yet, but she sure knows what it is for. She watches Milo go in and out all the time.

She was super quick to learn to sit. I have not done anything else with her so far though. She is the size of a 8 or 9 week old too. She is going to be a tiny one and I anticipate getting asked if she is a mini Sheltie. she is not!!

She's smart mentally definitely. Physically she is just a little behind, just like preemies are. They catch up. Give her time physically, and she will arrive.

I see her breeder is back on puppy feedings. If anyone can get those little ones to thrive, it is him!

I get the same with Baker - just have to keep educating people

We are doing well, or I should say Lacey is doing well, but she did piddle by the back door sometime today. There was a lot going on and she should not have been out of her pen. I was not home and we had an installation going on so Hubby lost track of her. Other than that things are much, much better, but I'm not sure she really gets it just yet. we were playing in the family room and she started to wander off and sniff the floor. I got her attention and got her out in time to go. She is still so young though, 11 weeks old tomorrow.

When should I expect her to be more aware? Right now she spends most of her day either in her pen or crate. We do have lots of play and free time too though. She is not there all the time.

I don't consider a puppy housetrained until they have had no accidents for 6 months. One accident restarts the clock.

Celtic could hold it all night in his kennel at 11 weeks(11pm -7am) and all day when I was at work(9-5) and he never had an accident for 2 months. He is 24 weeks on tues and he just had 2 this week. It is because we get lax and think hey he has this and then bam accident. She may get it soon but don't let up in your watchfulness for a long time.

That is SO the thing. We get lax. Just now Cubby wandered off while I was typing an email and started sniffing and circling. I realized and out we went quick and just in time. Yesterday I was working and he alerted with a tiny yip. Almost missed it but out we went and he did both. We haven't had an accident in a week but that was an upset tummy accident while I went outside to put the sheltie nation sticker on my car (of all things) and left him loose in the house (bad mommy). Before that has been a couple weeks. He's doing really well at my mom's house too. She can ask and he will go to the door or sit/walk other way.

Give it time. She's young and small. Shay had it nailed at 5 months though I didn't trust him really til 6 months because my office is carpet. Cubby seems to be doing good at 4 months but I wouldn't put it past him at all. I am giving him earlier freedom because I have had him so long and because I moved to a temporary desk downstairs on the wood floor.

Next week, hotel! Talk about a paranoid momma but I am very experienced with dogs in hotels and it's all about constant watching and going out often. Almost like potty training when in hotel.

We have a long way to go and I know it, but I hope she can be more reliable in a few weeks. I really don't expect anything from her just yet.

I think gher are various definitions of house trained.

I consider Callan has potty at trained at 6 months. That means no potty accidents inside or in his pen for the last 3 months.

But he is not house trained. That means he is chewing phase So I still xpen him when I can't watch him.

At 6 months he is getting better. It unreliable though.

Lacey goes in her pen a lot right now, at least she likes it. I'm sure as we hit the chewing stage she will be there whenever I can't watch her. My Eskie did a lot of destruction as a baby because we didn't pen him enough. That will not happen with her. I'm determined to not have as much of a problem as we did with him. It really was our own fault though.
