How much to feed 6 month old?

I'm kind of confused as to where we go from here. Barley has been eating 1/3 cup/3 times a day of Fromm Gold Puppy for a few months now.

He seems to be in good condition, though finishes his food quickly. I've been trying to cut out the lunch and move him to eating twice a day.

Any guidelines? He's probably around 16 or 17lbs now at 6 months. Fromm guidelines suggest between 1.5 to 1.75 cups a day, but that seems too much.

I was thinking 1/2 cup in the morning, 1/2 cup in the evening? He's got so much energy so he does burn off quite a bit. He also gets a about 30-40 minute walk every day.

sounds good

My girls were on Fromm as puppies and both of them were chowhounds, but active so they got about what you are feeding 3X a day...then I tapered off on the noon feeding when they got closer to a yr old. Just keep checking the ribs to make sure there isn't chubbiness.

Kaleigh would eat a whole bag if she could have, she always thought she was starving.

I switched Cleo to 2x a day 1/2 a cup in the morning and 1/2 a cup at night. Worked just fine for her.

You're right on target. I also feed Fromm Puppy Gold and cut Sprite to 1/3 cup morning and evening, and 1/4 cup at lunch time. Between 5 and 6 months of age I cut out the lunch feeding. Depending on her weight then (she's also very active) I'll go to 1/2 cup twice daily or maintain her at 1/3 cup.

The guidelines on the bags are always more than what a Sheltie should eat. It's very easy for Shelties to gain weight and tough to lose if they bulk up as a puppy. Sprite loves her food too and would eat more but it's not good for them to gain too much weight at this point, especially when they're still growing.

If you find that Barley is gaining more weight than you'd like at 1/2 cup twice daily, reduce his food or change him to the Fromm Adult Gold. My puppies move to the adult formula at 6 months old unless they're underweight.

I'm feeding Piper a total of about 3/4 cup per day but he gets a lot of treats throughout the day for his obedience training. Piper's only 14 pounds but Barley is probably bigger than him (he's only 13 1/4 inches). Piper is also a grazer so I pretty much leave his food out and he eats it during the day, I've also switched him to an all life stages food from the puppy food.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to cut him down to two 1/2 cup feedings a day and see how that goes. For the past couple of days I've been giving him a sweet potato chew (http://www.crumps.ca/about-us/7-products/10-sweet-potato-a-rawhide) instead of his lunch, and he seems fine with that.

He doesn't really get other treats through the day, except for freeze dried liver bites during training.

We're finishing a big bag of puppy food, but might try a bag of Fromm Grain Free adult for the next one.
