How much to feed?

I never use the suggested feeding on the packages. I'm not that stupid.

Just was wondering what normal intake should be be. Since he normally eats all his food, it implies that he is wanting more. But I checked his height and weight today.

Without a proper wicket I'm guessing his height at almost 12 inches. I weighed him at 10 lbs.

Checking the growth charts, this would imply he is on the high end of average so I'm guessing he is getting enough.

Mine eat it all and could easily want more at every feeding. They're Shelties. Most would happily eat through several cups without wanting to stop.

I was always told to let them eat all they want at each feeding. I can't remember how much they ate when they were little. His weight sounds consistent with his height. When is his next vet appointment?

I've struggled with this a little. On one hand I don't want my puppy to be hungry (he needs his nutrients to grow!), but on the other hand I want him to learn that working for me is fun and rewarding, which is a ton easier when he is hungry! I try to balance his work ethic with his weight. I want to make sure he has enough incentive to work (he's hungry!) and also enough nutrients to grow. I weigh him every week, compare to the charts as well as his littermates to make sure he is growing.

Eventually his incentive to work will be less about hunger and more about fun & biddability, but a lot of that is taught, I think.
