How much?

Olive is 10 months old, 15 inches, 22 pounds, and she gets 1.5 c of Blue Buffalo puppy per day. One cup in the AM and 1/2 cup in the PM. As I free feed (she is not into food--very weird for a sheltie based on my experience), I leave it down all day. If she finishes the AM cup, she gets the PM half cup. I don't put more food down in the evening if she still has any kibble in her bowl. Her weight has remained good using this method.

How much you feed depends entirely on what food you are feeding, as well as your dog's activity level and weight. You would feed much less of the premium holistic foods than lower quality foods.

So true. So what everyone here has posted really doesn't make a difference. What you feed your dog will be specifically for your dog. If the dog is underweight, feed more. Overweight, feed less. Just right, keep feeding that amount.

And just as comparison.

My 14yo non-active senior gets fed homemade food. 1 cup 2x day. He's 15.5" tall and about 17.5lbs (he needs to gain weight, but hasn't been. He's also not super healthy, so that could be the reason why).

My 5yo semi-active dog gets Acana, 1/4 cup 2x day. He's 18" tall and 19lbs. I keep him on the thinner side for agility, but I wouldn't say he's underweight.

Neither get daily treats. Koji gets treats once a week during agility training class.

Free Choice

My two Shelties have a huge bowl that is kept constantly full. They have total free choice as to when & how much they want to eat.

Both are in very good condition-I would consider my female Ashley to be slightly overweight however my vet disagrees-he says she is just right. My male, Rocky is in perfect condition-not an extra pound of fat.

They do have complete freedom to run the backyard 24 hours a day thanks to
their doggy door, so they do get lots of exercise chasing the squirrels that tease them from the top of the fencing.:smile2:
