As for Shelties and kids....it's all about training...usually people, not the dog! Some Shelties can be a little skittish, but I personally think it can be overcome if the people are properly trained!
If you bring home a pup at 8 or 10 weeks of age, and teach you 2 year old how to properly play, you should have no problems. If you bring home an older dog, find out how much exposure pup has had with kids and was the experience good or bad. If bad, it can be a difficult thing to overcome. But not impossible.
And Shelties are the best breed ever! Absolutely! I had one growing up as a kid. I brought home my own pup 13 years ago, who died last spring. In June I brought home 8 week old Bacca, and just last Sunday I brought home 9 month old Indy!
When my pup died, I looked at other breeds because my son felt very strongly about not "replacing" Timber with a look-alike dog. We researched the various breeds, but it always came back to a Sheltie!
But, as you will find out soon on this forum, we are a little fanatical when it comes to our breed!
