So I'm the designated agility instructor for the local 4H dog club this year. Now to start some basic course designs for novice. . . and find some way to make a cheap chute since we don't have one in the program.

What a blast! I wish dog agility would have been around when I was in 4-H. All I ever did was sewing (apron, pajamas, etc.) and entomology. At least my brother and sister got to have lambs.

Ok. now you just confused me. Everyone here talks about 4-H and I assumed it was to teach kids how to train / handle dogs in obedience and agility.

So what exactly is 4-H then?

4-H is an organization for youth organization by the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. 4-H is for kids in 4th grade on up (although there are "pep" clubs now for the younger kids), and there can be all sorts of different clubs. It started out (I believe) as being for kids with agricultural interests, so there were mostly Dairy Cow Clubs, Horse Clubs, Sheep Clubs, Beef, Goats, etc. Then it expanded to include clubs like sewing, photography, archery, and the list goes on and on.

The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, and life skills of youth through mostly experiential learning programs. The meetings are fun by a President....and is run very similar to a government meeting, teaching the kids how to take minutes, vote in different things, follow agendas, etc.

Thank you for explaining it to me. I guess it's not very popular in NYC because I did every sport and activity as a kid and I've never heard of 4-H. Sounds like 4-H is a great learning experience for children.

It is a great program. Basically It's called 4H because of the 4 H's. Heart, Hands, Health, and Head. It's actually a world wide thing now not just the US. They also have a KV program for ginuea pigs and rabbits. You should have 4H down in NYC too because I know we complain that they have a multi-million dollar program whereas we are struggling to get grants. Next year is going to be hard for Cornell Cooperative Extension in NY state. Plus the 4H regionalization crap they are trying to push people into.

Congratulations! How very exciting and great to spread agility to young people. I think it will be a great success. I know when I showed the 9 and 6 year old girls doing the agility to my 5 year old nephew, he was asking why he can't do that. I told him that I would have to train Maia first (I'm just learning!) but he was really eager to learn too. I think the 4H club will be very happy!

awesome, good for you!!!
They also have 4H here in Canada, seems more of a rural, agricultural thing for children, but I love the idea, and always excited to see them around :)
