Mally's Mom

Forums Enthusiast
Recently, on a MD talk show tap water was mentioned. He said to never just turn on the faucet and drink from it.(there is more lead in warm or hot tap water) (lead shrinks the brain and can cause memory loss.)

You should let the water run cold for at least one full minute.

Even with a faucet filter, I have been just turning on the cold water and drinking it. And doing the same with Mally's water bowl. (not knowing any better)

After hearing this information, I run the cold water at least one minute, I set a timer.

I wanted to call this information to everyone's attention.

I think it depends on the piping in your house and the infrastructure in your town. Copper piping is okay - building codes no longer allow lead piping in new construction and a lot of people are changing out to copper piping when renovating.

Very useful information. Thanks for sharing! I actually use bottled water for my dog because one time I read that the minerals in tap water could affect their urine and she had a lot of urinary tract infections at the time. I've been using bottle water for her ever since. But I will now run the faucet when I drink tap water from now on.

This is why I have a 6 stage reverse osmosis purification system under my sink :wink2: Got it for $100 on ebay years ago and I've gotta say it's the best thing I've ever gotten. I have to buy sediment filters once every 6 months and a new reverse osmosis filter once every year or so and that's it.

It is not just lead piping that is the problem. They used to use a lead based solder to join copper pipes together, and that has only been changed in the last 10 to fifteen years ago, of course it could be a little longer than that:smile2:

We moved here June 1. New town, new water supply. Rascal (our Sheltie/Pom mix) started having seizures within 2 weeks. His seizures increased in frequency until he was having them about once a week.

Hubby and I came up with the same thought independently. It has to be the water. Nothing else is different. Same food, etc.

So we switched to bottled water 10/22. He had a seizure on Nov. 7 and another one Dec. 15. We think we may be onto something. That's 5 weeks in between. Hubby says maybe it will take some time to get whatever was causing him problems out of his system. Maybe he'll never be seizure free again but we hope and think maybe the bottle water is helping him.

I've used a Britta filter pitcher for the dogs' water ever since I read an article more than 10 years ago in Whole Dog Journal about what tap water can do to a dog. We have a well and the water is great but it's so easy to just keep the Britta pitcher filled in the fridge. Why take the chance? We of course drink it from the faucet....
