Intradermal Allergy Test

Has anyone had one of these skin tests done on their dog? Deska is booked into a dermatologist and they suggested he get this done, but I understand they have to shave them to do it. And it's expensive. But mostly I don't want to shave him when we don't even know if it's allergies. So I guess I want to know is - it is as bad as it looks and do they shave a lot off?

For the last couple of years Deska is at the vet almost every month with a hot spot (lick granuloma), almost always on his tail, but the latest is on his side. Plus he regularly gets an infected rash in his groin area. His fur isn't great and it has gotten shorter and thinner. He has dander around the lower back and skin peeling around the base of his tail. His T4 was low but still within range and I haven't had the full thyroid test done, mainly because the vets think he's too skinny for a thyroid dog and I haven't pushed it because of $$$. He's been tested for Cushings and Addisons.

Had it done with my first Sheltie. They shaved the whole side. It was awful. AND the test results indicated that he was allergic to enviromental things....Trees, grass, etc. So all we could do was treat the symptoms anyway.

I won't do it again. It was expensive and awful and didn't really help us with anything

Thanks for that. If it is that bad I'd rather give it is a miss. I did say I'd decide by the time I see the dermo vet next. Not sure that the dermatitis is really from a contact allergy, which apparently is all the test looks for. I know he has some hay fever, he's sneezing along with the rest of Canberra atm, but that's not causing the flaky skin and it's only mild.

Trying another elimination diet - this time rabbit and pumpkin, which will have to wait until their tummies settle anyway (and I can get over cutting up whole rabbits).
