I think our dogs are attuned to our health and moods and, like people, the degree varies with the individual. I have been ill for a couple of weeks now. Annie Laurie lays in the doorway as if guarding me. Layla lies with me for long periods. Beckon exhibits no special awareness -- teenage boy. Bits isn't concerned about me, but she wouldn't leave DS's side -- her Mom -- when DS was home sick.

So it makes sense, Michele, that Trapp is attuned to Ernhardt and wants to provide relief to any discomfort he senses.

Jake's "medicine"

Quite a number of years ago now, my very elderly mother went through surgery to repair a broken hip. Following the surgery she went to a rehab unit where she became virtually catatonic. I brought our Jake with me to see her one day and he immediately, without any promotion on my part, jumped up on her lap (she was in a wheelchair) without hurting her wound at all. He began comprehensively licking her arm, from wrist to shoulder. During that time she began to be more responsive and by the time he was done she had a big smile on her face. I really believe that Jake saved her. Shelties are so intuitive. Regards, Will
