Kennel Cough

We had a bout of KC go though here in July we got it from a dog show. I know this because some of my friends dogs got it too and it was the only common exposure point.

I only vaccinate my dogs as puppies until they get there own immunity built up. Celtic had been vaccinated 10 months prior. He got it the worse, hacked badly for 3 days I put him on doxy immediately and he was over it in 7 days. Birch coughed for 2 days that was it. He had not been vaccinated for 3 yrs. Ember coughed a total for 2x and Justice never got it. Both Justice and Ember have not been vaccinated for atleast 6 yrs.

I still dont plan to vaccinate anyone in the future

OK, it's been interesting to watch.

Marque: 11 1/2 years old, didn't get it the first time we had it years ago, and is so far avoided this go 'round. He had a bordatella as a puppy, years ago.

River: 7 years old, has it the worst by far. Started coughing on Tuesday, has had a heavy cough for two days and was wheezy this morning. His cough is starting to be productive, and he's hacking up small amounts of fluid occasionally. If I can keep him calm, he's OK. I started him on AmoxiClav this morning (they were his to begin with, so they are appropriately dosed). He'll probably have a trip to the vet tomorrow if there isn't some significant improvement today.

Evie: 7 years old. She seems to have a standard case, occasional coughing, nothing horrible.

Jase: 2 years old. Coughing on occasion, but those occasions seem to coincide with me handing out yummy medicine, so I have some doubts... he might be working the system.

The hardest part is keeping them calm and quiet. All I have to do is twitch, and they are all like "what are we (cough cough) doing? are we (cough cough hack) going somewhere?"

My previous dog (not a Sheltie) came down with KC and even had complications although he had NO exposure to other dogs. Vet didn't seem all that concerned about the way he contracted it. Said it's in the air. But it scared me so that I insisted that the vaccine evermore only to find that all too often even the vaccine doesn't protect the dogs fully and a very good DayCare nearby (that always insisted on the vaccine) ended up with cases after cases of it.

Love this

Great news! I hope they continue to improve quickly. Do you think the Slippery Elm and honey helped a lot?

Cleo had kennel cough when we first got her. She was 12 weeks and scared me to death. She ended up on nebulizer treatments for a couple of days. She was running a fever and had a hard time breathing and wouldn't even eat. Slept all day. I was afraid I was going to loose her. Luckly after a week on medication she was on the improvment end of things. I would say it took about two and a half weeks befor all the coughing and eye gunk was gone and she was back to normal.

I am glad they are all doing better. I hope they recover fast. I can't imagine how scary it would be to have 3 dogs and the possibility of 4 with that at the same time. :eek2: My vet would hate me by the time they would be better. I guess because I'm a big worry wart! Good luck and keep us updated!
