Kennel Cough

Mango picked up kennel cough while getting fixed, and promptly shared it with Honey. We're on day 5 of no walks now...and my easy going border mix is turning into a crazy whirlwind of hopping naughtiness. Even worse we can't even be outside that much because all the pollen's and dust tend to aggravate it and I don't want the neighbors dog coming outside and running up to the fence to say hello and getting sneezed and coughed all over, and I haven't seen him yet to warn him that our corner of the yard is a risk.

I feel so bad for the bored little girls :(

Just a caution....keep an eye on your pups. The new strain of canine flu that's around appears as what seems like kennel cough but quickly turns to pneumonia that requires immediate hospitalization. If they start sneezing too or become lethargic, monitor their temperatures. People I know whose dogs have had it required two antibiotics and isolation for a month.

Yes, very true. Down in my area they've been cancelling events and asking that any dogs who have been in an area known to have dogs diagnosed with the flu be kept home from class. It's been very serious.

Thanks for the warning! I took them into the vet as soon as I saw how much Mango was sneezing and their temps were normal then. Both have good energy, and she put Mango on antibiotics. So far Honey hasn't developed a cough with this, if she does the vets going to put her on some as well. Mango seems mostly past it, although right as I was thinking "You know I don't think I heard Mango sneezing yesterday, maybe I can get her out this evening for a quick walk" she started again this morning. Much better overall though, which is reassuring.

She's just such a baby about the whole thing and panics so much when she starts reverse sneezing, she makes it worse. Honey starts and she opens her mouth pants for a few moments and the fit passes right away, if it's really persistent she comes over so I can rub her snout. Mangos were lasting 2 minutes...although as Caro pointed out in the thread about her getting fixed the stitches pulling whenever she starts probably contributes to her panic.
