Kong's filling alternative

Hi, guys!

I brought Jasper a kong while I was out getting the remaining items Annie needed. My thought I would get home, and the milkbone biscuits would fit. wrong.. LOL

So, I was wondering what are some alternative you all use to fill the kong with? Is regular creamy peanut butter an option? Anything as long as it not $15 for the can/box would be nice... just a nice cheap alternative since we may use the kong quite a bit.

thanks,
Beth~

ps. wasnt sure if health was a good place for foods questions... but since we already had some foods question here already.. here this one is!

I put peanut butter in Sadie's Kong on a regular basis. Cheese Whiz works well too.

To make these things last longer you can stuff the Kong the night before and put them in the freezer. I've also heard people mention freezing yogurt as well. Sadie loves yogurt but I haven't tried it in her Kong yet.

Cheerios in a Kong, about half-way filled, with the opening sealed with peanut butter or Cheese Whiz.

Apple and carrot chunks (or other fruits acceptable for dogs) in the Kong and mush a piece of banana in the opening to hold the fruit in place.

My easiest one that I use all the time: Frozen green beans, carrot pieces, two or three pieces of Spencer's regular Wellness Core and the opening sealed with a dab of peanut butter.

Lots of things are great in Kongs!

I like to smear a bit of peanut butter on the inside and then dump in a handful of frozen peas, shake it up so they stick to the peanut butter and offer it that way. If you choose to use something like peanut butter or cheese whiz, remember to use restraint. Those treats are very fatty and high in sodium, so too much certainly isn't healthy for the pooches. About a teaspoon per Kong is plenty to keep them occupied for a good long time.

I've also used yogurt mixed with a whole variety of things. Pure fruit or veggie baby food (check to make sure there is low sodium and no spices or onions), pure apple sauce, honey, mashed bananas or other fruit, etc. About 75% yogurt and 25% other ingredient. Mix it up well, stretch a piece of plastic wrap over the small hole end of the Kong, stand the Kong up in a small drinking glass, fill through the large whole with your yogurt mixture, and stick in the freezer over night. You can do the same thing with low sodium, no preservative broth. Or try some high quality canned dog food, something like EVOs 95% meat options.

Always remember to count the Kong stuffings in with the regular food allotment for the day. Offer a smaller dinner or breakfast as appropriate. No need to make chubby puppies!

I use chicken or turkey baby food...again, only a small amount, with a kibble or two of low-fat adult food in the bottom as a treat. I make the kongs up early and freeze them in a plastic bag. Keeps them busy for at least a few minutes!

Yum.....Shelly loves her Kongs filled with either Cheerios or doggie yogurt cookies with peanut butter to seal them in . :yes:Thanks Jan244 for suggesting apples I didn't know dogs would eat them. I love apples dipped in peanut butter myself and guess what so does Shelly now. But I'll still eat mine from a dish I'll leave the Kong for Shelly. Next I'll be trying the Cheese Whiz. Thanks for starting this thread I didn't know there were so many things to fill the Kongs with!:wink2:

These are great tips :smile2:

Ours love their nightly baby carrot (as we're making our salads) and will even eat a piece of lettuce.
