I use a coupler irregularly. When I dont want them wandering all over the place I put it on (esp if we are on busy footpaths). Its also useful if I want to be relatively hands free, say to hold shopping. as I use a double ended lead over my shoulder.
I always use it with a harness because I dont want one dog to be able to pull the other one's neck, there is a huge size and weight difference between my two (altho its little Tully that tends to do most of the pulling).
Most of the time though I want to allow the dogs to sniff and explore, it gives them more mental stimulation. So then they get seperate leads, they never seem to want to sniff the same things.
