LONG weekend (3 full-day trial and a title)

Well, I'm finally home. I wasn't about to drive home at 3:30pm yesterday, through downtown Los Angeles and about 120 miles. So we stayed in BFE.

It was hot. High 80's, 15% humidity. I know elsewhere, like where many of you are, it's worse, but seeing as how it was 65-70 when I left my house, that's hard. Hard on me, the dogs, everyone.

Okay, this is what we ran. 6 rounds of Standard, 3 rounds of Chances, 3 rounds of Jumpers, Weavers, Tunnelers, and Touch n Go.

Let's just say I'm disappointed and proud of Koji.

The disappointments (the bad stuff first): he blew his dog walk contact almost every round. And therefore, blew at least 3 Q's. AUGH! I blew a serpentine, and missed a Jumpers Q. Touch n Go? Wow, he was all over the place. And of course, we totally failed Chances (which is like Gamblers). But that was expected. Out of 15 runs, Koji got 4 Q's.

The proud factor: He was absolutely awesome on the dog walk and A-frame. As in he did them, without hesitation. Remember, in April he was refusing them. We had a TON of "almost" clean runs. Where we got faulted only once. And in Chances, oh my. I was so proud. In one round, he took TWO tunnels past the line. In the second, he ALMOST made the jump (but I pulled him off due to the line) and in the third, he took one jump past the line. Hey, that's a lot for a velcro dog. So I was very very proud. And lastly, I was so proud of all his runs. He was crazy barky all day long, it was hot, it was windy and dusty. But he ran through it all, worked his hardest, and ran fast and I'd say, this was by far, his best trial ever!

My biggest rewards. 1. His NJC (finally - I figured he'd get it fast cuz he loves Jumpers, so I'm happy for this one). 2. 4 Q's (2 in Jumpers, Weavers, and Tunnelers).

Last notes: I've learned that Koji is absolutely AWESOME at rear crosses (prolly cuz he likes to pull into me a lot). The tunnelers course, was basically about 8 RCs. Even the elites had to to FCs to save themselves. But Koji ran it perfectly and FAST with RCs. We need to work on our dog walk contacts (my trainer said now that he's got more confidence, this is typical). I need to STOP doubting myself and run what I know will work, versus what other people are doing. Having an experienced handler there to give me pointers, and friends at the trial, makes it that more awesome. And lastly, 3 days is WAY too much. LOL. My dogs haven't moved a bit in the past 2 days. And I need some much needed sleep.

Last but not least, attached is a photo of Koji and all his ribbons from this weekend. The big teal and black one, is for "new title". I figured I'd get it since it's also his first title.

Congrats on the title--that's awesome!

And it sounds like you guys have some really great positives. Now that he'll get on those contacts like a champ, you just need to fine-tune your criteria.

Also, I know how proud you are of his tunnels/jumps past the line in Chances. That really is very difficult for a velcro dog, and it sounds like Koji really tried to do what you asked ("You want me to go OVER THERE...away from YOU? Eek!")

Congrats again!

Congrats on the title!

It sounds like you really learned a lot from the successes and disappointments. I hope that my attitude is half as good as yours when we begin to trial.

Congrats.

How exhausting - 3 days and 12 runs, I dont know how you managed. I did my first 2 day weekend (only 4 runs) and have had migraine since!

I think almost clean runs are fantastic too - it means basically a great run with just a minor tweak for next time. Love the title ribbon.

Congrats on the new title!!! You and Koji worked hard for that and its paid off.

Overall, it sounds like you had a pretty good weekend even with the "almosts". (I've had my share of "almosts" recently - believe me.)

GREAT news with the Chances runs! Keep working at it. The more comfortable and confident he gets the easier it will be for him to work away from you. Also, at your classes, tell your instructors you want to improve your distance work and ask if they can help you. You can also help yourself by drawing an invisible line in your mind not to cross when approaching things like tunnels or pinwheel sequences (work on sending him out to the far jump while you stay near the open end of the pinwheel).

You've come a long way since your first trial! Keep at it! I'll be thinking about you this weekend during our mutual CPE trials!

Thanks everyone. Truly, my attitude at times stinks. I want to wring Koji's neck for missing his contacts! But then, I also have to look in the mirror and I think that is what is most humbling and keeps me in line. lol. Knowing that I'm sure it's me too.

I probably won't trial NADAC until the end of the month. Talk about getting expensive. lol. Oh and Sheri, CPE is the 19-20. Couple more weeks. Even though I want those darn Q's. LOL.

Y'know what I was thinking about.....our Chances runs. I noticed that in trial, Koji tends to run away from me. (I so need to show you guys our tunnelers/jumpers run, they were awesome!). in class, maybe because it's smaller, he's a lot more sticky. So my goal is, get distance in class....cuz that'll mean even more distance at trials. Oh, and we have to start discrimination. Koji loves tunnels and I THOUGHT he knew what it was. Nope. How can a very smart dog, be so dense at times?

BTW, I found out my friend's dog will be going into Open Jumpers. That means Koji has a chance to win Novice Jumpers himself. :)

I keep thinking of how proud I am of him. He's come so far in the past 7 months. Makes me think of that video in the other thread.
