Looking for a breeder?

I have decided for my next service dog I wanted a Sheltie. A lot of research has gone into this as well as advice from other SD handlers who had Shelties. The puppy would be carefully trained and socialized. The tasks required of the puppy would be medical alerts/responses then stuff such as retrieving medicine from certain places, picking up dropped items if needed, etc. I am in the process of saving up the money to buy the pup, so it will probably be closer to August/September before I am ready to purchase. But wanted to start looking now!

Preferences are mostly for a female, but males aren't out of the question. I don't have a preference on colors, although I do love the Merle and Tri. Temperament is the most important part!

Check the forum rules on breeder names being posted. However if you check the ASSA you can find some listing that are reputable. I got Sca via that and then Spitfire via a recommendation from Sca's breeder. The people listed might not have puppies but are active in the community and could likely be helpful. Good luck.

What part of Alabama? We are all the way in the north and Calliesmom has the south. I believe there are a couple of members around B'ham but they are less active.

yes- what part of Alabama? I also know people in FL, MS and LA so someone will know of a puppy when you are ready.
you'll need to make 10 posts before the pm system can be used.

I am in Birmingham, AL. I have emailed all the AL, TN, MS, and GA breeders the ASSA listed and am waiting to hear back. Also have 2 people who know people in the show rings asking about any reputable breeders.

Sca is a Tennessee Sheltie and Spitfire Kentucky. That said there are some good breeders in Alabama also (Sca's got relatives south of us )

there are other breeders than those listed.... and hopefully the ones that you have contacted will be able to refer you to others that might have puppies for your timeframe:fl

Specific requests for help in finding a breeder are not permitted in the public forum. Please see the rules for more information and this helpful thread we have put together for prospective puppy buyers.

However, a great place to start is with the American Shetland Sheepdog Association, including their page on finding a puppy.

You can find ASSA member breeders. While ASSA membership is not a guarantee, it does indicate that the breeder is involved in the sport of dogs (not just breeding puppies to make more puppies), is part of a community of breeders, and has pledged to a code of ethics.

You can also find local Sheltie clubs, which is also an excellent place to start. They will be able to connect you to breeders and guide you in choosing a reputable one.

I encourage you to consider widening your geographical search a bit. The best breeder for you may be a long drive (or even a plane ride) away.

If you have any questions feel free to contact a moderator for more information.
