Lyme Vaccine

I have been debating the Lyme vaccine as well. I hear that it is better to treat your dog for the disease (if he gets it) than to get the vaccine. The problem is if you ask 100 people : you will get 50 for it and 50 against it . UGHHH who knows!!!!!:confused2:
 
I had my dogs vaccinated for Lyme years ago, and without exception, every single one got Lyme while they were on it. Once they're vaccinated, the Lyme test often isn't accurate...it can be a difficult test in terms of accuracy anyway. My vet doesn't use the vaccine; he doesn't think it's worthwhile and I agree. Why vaccinate my dogs with a chemical that didn't work on them in the first place? Recent studies have also proven that it is not as effective as it is purported to be, which my experience shows.

We have also given up the chemical spot-ons like Frontline and Advantix, since they contributed to seizures in one of mine. Now we use a natural flea and tick repellant on all of them, Nature's Defense, and we live in Connecticut where ticks are rampant. Last season I had no problems at all, and very few ticks on the dogs.

Ann, do you have an website for the Nature's Defense. Is it a spray or what? Thanks for the information!!!
 
I've bought it from numerous websites but surprisingly, found it is cheapest at Cherrybrook (where everything else is more expensive!) Here's a link to it there...it is also less expensive overall that Frontline, Advantix etc. It's made by Sentry...you may be able to find general information for it on their website.

The only complaint people have had is the strong clove smell, which bothered one of my dogs slightly for a day -- we didn't mind it at all, and treat three of them with it. Some dogs do seem to object to the strong scent though. I would never use any dose other than the one for up to 15 lbs, no matter what your pups weigh. That has worked on all of ours.

Hey Ann, are you using Natural Defense year round to build it up or just in flea and tick season? MMM has never used anything because he was so little this past summer and with puppy fur it just took me 2 minutes to check everyday. Now it is so cold, we don't need it, but I am thinking towards warmer days again.
 
I would have used it in December but it got nice and cold here. I don't treat them over the winter...usually Dec/Jan/Feb and I pick up again early March, since we can get some warm spells then. None of these products are cumulative so you can't build them up. And the only thing about Nat Defense is that if you bathe them, you have to redo it; it's not waterproof. But it's inexpensive enough that I don't mind. I just try to time baths around treatment.

ya ticks have been getting bad here in Central ny,my vet told me i should consider getting them the vaccine but i have yet to do it cause there isnt a whole lot of information about it.

wasnt chris using that and it worked awhile but eventually she started finding ticks on them and switched? i know we had a thread around here about it. i like the fact that its chemical free dont know if i could put up with the smell though i hate the smell of clove.

As far as I know, Chris (and several others besides me) still use it. Maybe Chris will weigh in and let us know. You will find ticks on your dogs no matter what you use as a preventative. None of them are 100 percent. All you can hope for is to keep the numbers down. I found very few on my guys this year on the Nature's Defense.
