I've never had a dog who marked, so I'm not sure what the protocol is. Do you allow your dog to mark whatever they want? Feels like that would make for an annoying walk. Do you just use treats to encourage them to move on?

When they are on a walk on leash no making unless I say go potty. They can pee where ever they what outside as long as it is not on a building or chair, patio furniture, deck etc. I follow the same protocol as indoors and the same corrections I would use otherwise with a puppy. Older intact male I get firmer no means no. They are physically stopped if on leash or removed if off leash. They learn fast what is allowed and what isn't if the rules are always the same.

If Beckon is on leash, he knows not to mark until I take him to a bush. If he's free, he does whatever he likes. He had to be disciplined for Rally, so he leaned the rules. I did the "just keep walking, Buster" routine.

Not, as a rule, when we're walking. However sometimes I'll get distracted and Dickens will step aside if there's a particularly attractive shrubbery nearby. I swear he has a three-gallon reserve tank for continuous use.

Mostly, yes I do. I walk the dogs for them, so if Deska wants to sniff I let him (as part of the marking routine). Sniffing stimulates the brain so the walk becomes mentally stimulating as well (and with an arthritic dog the mental part of the walk is important). We recommend in our classes to allow their dog's to sniff on walks, esp at the start of the walk near their home, to tire them out quicker, calm them down a little, and so they get to know the doggy telegraph in their area.
As for marking, Deska's more likely to do that closer to home, which again I think is fair enough. I will tell them 'lets go' if I think it's been long enough. I will stop him if I think he is marking something he shouldn't (like a letter box) or he's sniffing and going to mark another dog's poo (don't want him dragging his fur through it) or in a public area like around the shops. Tully marks too (not as much) and I do stop her if she marks near a pavement as she's a pee walker.

I allow Ruu to mark outside, mainly because he's only outside while we're pottying (no fence) and usually our walks are in order to get him to potty. However, I had a marking issue with dog classes/buildings and outdoor dog classes and I made him wear a belly band for a month or so because he'd try to mark. Granted, he doesn't lift his leg, so he doesn't hit anything but the floor. The belly band made him realize it's not okay to mark indoors. He's never done it in a house though.

If I am out there to exercise Fillion then we go go go. But otherwise I let them read the peemail and contribute to the story if they choose. Within reason...sometimes I'm not willing to wait while they read a novella and move them along.

By the way, when it comes to males marking, if you get a live Christmas tree, all bets are off.

You go pee and mark and I will stop for you, and then just say ok let's go... or do a recall and then say go sniff.
Which is what my terrier friends had to do to try and get their dog interested in being with you, instead of getting the sniffies at really inappropriate moments lol
Shelli's reply NOW this makes sense to me why Spruce doesn't really wanna pee when on leash, LOL. I find he does all his business SO much quicker if he is off-leash, now that all makes sense, bahahahaha

Usually for us, walks are for exercise, and I want to sufficiently wear Cookie out before we do any sniffing/stopping etc. We don't stop to potty unless I say the words, then he will go. If we are just on a leisure walk, he can sniff, but not forever. He can mark as long as it isn't on someone's object (furniture, pots, decks, mailboxes, etc).
