MDR1 mutant/normal pup and anti-inflammatory or pain drugs

Kenzie, my 5 year old Sheltie, is due to have major resorptive root surgery on Oct.1. Due to her drug sensitivity, I'm panicking over the anti-inflammatory and/or pain drugs they may give her after the surgery. The dental vet specialist who has been practicing 30 years has only dealt with 'about a dozen' dogs with MDR1 mutations. Does anyone have a mutant/normal Sheltie who tolerated an anti-inflammatory and/or pain killer well? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Some of mine are mutant/normal and have never had a problem with any painkillers and I think we've had most of them on the market at one time or another. What you need to be aware of, though, is to make sure they have on your dog's record BEFORE surgery that she is MDR mutant/normal for anesthesia. Some types of anesthesia are an issue for MDR dogs. Good luck to Kenzie! I'm sure she'll do fine.

Like Ann I've had mutant/normal who has been through most pain relief. I had issues with ACP and butophanyl (sp?) in a mutant/normal dog so we avoid the pre-meds before surgery and don't use them post surgery. My dog had very bad hallucinations and couldn't control his bladder, and had other neuro issues. My dog's reaction was the reason I got the MDR1 test done. I'd suggest letting the specialist know you want to avoid these two. An MDR1 dog only needs a fraction of the normal dose, and the specialist wouldn't have the experience to know. Plus they are easily avoided anyway.

I'm surprised the specialist said s/he has only dealt with a small number - it's quite common in Collie breeds (esp in Aussie Shephards and Roughs), but it's more likely that many of those dogs just hadn't been tested.
