Measuring for a jacket

I know a lot of you don't believe in putting jackets on your dogs, but we are planning a trip to Quebec at the end of January to the Winter Carnival, and are planning to take the dogs. The high around that time is 17 and the low is 3 (eep!) and we are hoping that the dogs can join us for a lot of the activities (Quebec City appears to be VERY dog friendly!).

Anyways, Clean Run has free shipping through mid-December, so I'm thinking of getting these nice Hurtta jackets

But, here's the trouble. Our dogs measure about 16" in length, from withers to base of tail, but measure much smaller in the other categories (17" in neck, 20" in chest). I know they say to order a bit bigger for dogs with longer fur...but that's a lot of tightening!

But, I don't want their butts hanging out.

What do you guys think?
 
I can't offer sizing help, although I think their furry butts would look cute hanging out. I just want to wish you a wonderful trip-Quebec city is beautiful without snow, but with snow it is fantastic!!!

Your Ohio weather is not alot different from Quebec City so you pups should acclimatize well. I would not be concerned about the cold.

The only reason for jackets would be if they get snowed on and you want to attempt to keep them dry. In which case, rain gear is good enough.

I would suggest booties however. If you are going to walking around streets, etc, both you and the pups would appreciate that. I think Quebec City still salts their roads, so you'll want that for protection for their feet.

The only other thing I would recommend is carry a towel or shammy with you. If the snow starts to fall, you'll want to towel them off before you have to go back inside.
 
I lived in Quebec most of my life and I never had to put a jacket on my dogs.
( except the Lhasa as a pup) The salt was a problem! I would have to wipe their feet on walks.
As far as sizing I have found nothing fits their body shape. They are too long, and as you said, their butts hang out. Ryder looks so pathetic in his Thundershirt. I made Maverick his rain coat and I even had to alter the pattern.
 
If you're worried about them being cold, instead of buying something fleece lined I would get something that repels wind and wet. Something like this may suit your needs more.

I bought one of these for Sadie when she'd lost all of her undercoat after being on prednisone.

But if I'm totally wrong, what you picked out is SUPER cute. Can't wait to see pics, either way. :smile2:
 
I think our dogs just have strange body shapes or something. Deep chests, narrow necks, long backs. Nothing ever fits Koji or Miko. Even the life vest I had to tighten some straps to the end, loosen others to the other end. Maybe you can call CR and ask them what they think. I bet they'd know. ;)

Either way good luck. And definitely get booties for salt (or so I hear). I have muttlucks and love them. Some people hate them, but they replaced a set for free due to loose stitching. Gotta love that about them. I'm pretty sure there's a thread about booties on here somewhere.
