My Sheltie Has Anxiety!

sheltie anxiety

Our little gal Zoey is a blue merle mess. She started showing signs of anxiety and over reactive barking at just 5 months old. It started with her barking at the sound of the county snow plows and has evolved into barking at noises both inside and outside our home. We finally consulted with behaviorist Nancy Williams. Her advice, which was quite good, was overwhelming. Long story short is Zoey's behavior is partially genetic, partially our doing, so now we're trying her suggestions and with her and our vet's approval started her on Prozac. It's too early to tell, but we think we see some improvement, especially at night - she's sleeping soundly, something she never did before the medication. My little gal will be 2 years old on September 22. She is the only sheltie out of six we've owned that is so over the top.

How about giving her a Kong filled with something really yummy in the other room when people leave? You could try freezing wet dog food.

You could also give her a raw bone in another room when someone is leaving.

When she's in this other room, you may want to put on a radio so that its harder for her to hear the person opening and closing the door.

If she's still destroying things, crate her with the Kong or bone.

I have the same problem with leaving!!

I have the same problem with my sheltie. He gets SO.... upset anytime anyone leaves the house, even to throw trash out. I am his favorite and even if I am still home and the kids go to the bus, he freaks out. I am lucky that he does not destroy anything while I am gone, he just turned one.
I have tried leaving treats, bones, etc. but he will run back to the door, run around in circles in a frenzy.
I also need to find a job before I hire someone. I just hope she can help me.
Any help until them would be great!!!
