My sheltie is fat!

I'm glad other people feed their shelties 1/4 cup per feeding. I started noticing that mine looked sorta like a sausage on toothpicks, that's when I reduced his feeding dramatically and cut out all treats! I'm not sure if it's made a difference or not, but I notice when I bath him, he shrinks! :lol:

My boyfriend acts like I'm committing a sin! How dare I cut an overweight dog's food back. No gratuitus treat feeding? And I call myself an animal lover. Green beans and carrots aren't "treats", dog treats are treats. It's true what they say, training never truly ends...:lol::razz:. My boys think that the fact it comes from my hand directly, it is a treat.

Heck, I've even fooled my border collie into taking medicine directly (without wrapping in food). Here's how I imagine his thought process: #1- She's got something in her hand and calling me, must be a treat! #2. She's making me "do" something for it (simple trick). I get treats for doing a trick, so it really must be a yummy treat.

Marlie gets only a 1/4 of a cup twice a day, she would be huge if I fed her more! I like how you trick your border collie with the medicine! I need to remember that!!

that worked for my old mixed breed- not these 2 dogs- doesn't taste good- spit it out.................:razz: so they get squeeze cheese for all pills- now they come running when you say pills :smile2:
 
My shelties have to have pills hidden in hotdog slices, but my border collie will eat absolutely anything...non food items are his favorite...socks, poop, scrunchies, he's even eaten DH's paycheck and a lightbulb.
 
My vet suggested I feed half their normal kibble then add enough gren beans (thawed frozen) to equal their regular feeding amount. When Phoebe first came to me she was a little porker. In three weeks she has lost 5 lbs eating this way
