Nails???

I just got the Black and Decker version of the Dremmel and it seems to be more quiet. Also, considerably less costly. Will have to see how long it lasts.
 
My guys are done once each week. I keep my clippers SHARP and take off nail slivers instead of cutting pieces off. Right now I'm using Millers Forge on the big dogs and Safari nail clippers on the Shelties. LOVE them both. That's followed by a quick dremel to round them out and remove sharp edges. I follow the alternate cut line when trimming, so nails are nice and short. My young dog also enjoys self filing where I've taught him to scratch his front nails on a board lined with sandpaper. Works really well and I'd suggest that method to those that have difficult dogs.
 
We walk on pavement and I still trim Shelby's nails every week. Her nails grow like crazy. She would never tolerate a dremmel so I just clip. She has black and white nails. When I trim the black I try to just trim the same amount as the white and I really have never had a problem.
 
It depends on the dog. Three of mine need it once a week, two every two weeks and Barkley, for some reason, must wear his nails down herding the phone when it rings. His backs NEVER need anything, and his fronts, once a month at most.

I clip the young ones and then dremmel, and the older dogs just dremmel. My eyesight isn't great so I'm nervous about clipping too close. I find the dremmel much less stressful for me, and once they're trained to tolerate it, it works great.
 
DH trims Olive's nails once a week. If she's sounding like a tap dancer - even when excited - he trims more. We do a clipper and dremmel routine. If there's any sharp edges he catches themw ith the dremmel (really pedipaws, he doesn't like using the actual dremmel on her.)
 
Deska needs his done every 2 weeks - basically the same time as I trim the pad fur, he gets the right side done more than the left, I think because of his arthritis limp.

Tully hardly ever needs nail trimming. With the bad hip I've done it a little more often but basically I think she runs so much she wears them down. Just as well because all her nails are black and I can't see the quick. Since I read to clip on an angle (was it by someone here), it's been a lot easier.
 
I do Cleo's nails every two weeks when I trim the fur inbetween her pads. I use the clippers and then I have a dremmel that I use to file off the sharp edges. Cleo likes to heard my 4 year old when he runs through the house, and the jumping on him has caused quite a few scratches in the past. This has made a big difference. :yes:
 
Mozart's seems to grow at different rate. Front paws centre two needs trimming very 2 weeks. Back ones seems to take a month or more and only need a bit of filing. He freaks at the sound of dremmel. I had to return it to the store. It's the good old clipper and nail filer for him.
