Natural Flea and Tick Prevention

Ironically, the infestation of fire ants that is prevalent in south TX keeps fleas at bay in my backyard. Now, TICKS and MOSQUITOES are another story. Ann, can you recommend anything natural as a tick repellent? Right now all three of my dogs are on vet-recommended medication, which DOES work, but it's expensive, and I'd rather try out anything that I DIY.

Brandy, I use the remedies I described more for ticks than fleas, which are a bigger problem here in Connecticut than fleas are. I use apple cider vinegar mixed with water or the essential peppermint oil mixed with water and spritz the dogs daily. It's worked very well for me keeping the bugs at bay.

You might also consider the new natural product, Wondercide, as a tick/mosquito repellent. It's quite effective, but I found the smell was too strong for me. You buy that online and it's not as expensive as the chemicals. https://www.wondercide.com/

Thanks. I need to watch what I put on my dogs since the cats often push the dogs away from the dogbeds set up in the living room, and a lot of the preventatives out there are harmful to cats. Frontline doesn't work anymore, my dogs are okay with Nexgard but that tends to add up, and the day after I got trifexis from my vet, I start reading about how bad it can be and have yet to hand them out to the dogs.

I'm willing to get a head start this year. We had rain these past few weeks, a very not-normal thing for this area of Texas, and it's just a matter of time before the first mosquitos start showing up. Plus, Kel loves to wallow in mud, and that's where the ticks are...

Thanks, I'm going to try everything mentioned here and look at the wondercide site.
