need help trying to get sheltie more active inside

Hello. Im new here but I think my situation fits best in this category.
We got a 8 month old sable male and have had him a little over a month. We picked him up from a breeder on a farm and he became over time adaptive to that environment and being around his parents and not spending tons of time inside. Now that he is in his "new" home the first few weeks he was very depressed and didn't want to really eat, and do anything outside. He has since improved and is fairly active outside.
But my issue is: He is crate trained and he loves to spend the time he is in the house in his crate as that is where he feels safe. However he hasn't made any kind of effort to really investigate the house or spend time where the two of us are usually hanging out normally in the living room. If we bring him out he just high tails it to the master bedroom where his crate is at. He is well socialized and in general doesn't seem to be afraid but just doesn't seem interested at what's going on in the house. The vet said this sounds like a form of anxiety as he is still coping from being removed from the routine he knew for 8 months and in due time should break, he said it's important to not block his access to get to his safe area. I am satisfied with the progress we have made so far. Especially that fact we leash trained him and he now looks forward to going for walks, but just concerned that even though we haven't had him long to just spend a good part of the day in his cage while he is free to roam isn't a good habit. Anyone else have a similar situation and possible advice? Thanks. Scott

Welcome to the forum!

If your puppy eats kibble and will eat from your hand, I recommend hand-feeding him his meals. It'll help him feel comfortable around you and create a bond.

You can also try keeping his leash on in the house. Walk him around and treat him for investigating and hanging out with you.

I'm sure many members will chime in and give you more advice. Good luck!

Will try the leash inside. He won't eat from your hand, and really doesn't like treats. So all we can do is positive reinforcement and praise when he does something good. To increase the bond though he has slept in our bed the last few weeks during the night. He seems to really enjoy that and could care less about his kennel when he is on the bed.

what kind of treats are you using? Have you tried cheese or turkey hot dogs? Something smelly with higher value might entice him. Also freeze dried liver works really well.

Hi Scott :smile2: I don't have any specific suggestions other than I know that time does wonders. We have had Sassy for 3 months (got her at 11 mo old) & are her 3rd owners. When we brought her home she was very anxious in lots of situations, in fact spastic, and is really just now getting comfortable with us. Hang in there...it will get better.

if you are ok with him sleeping in bed at night- move his crate to the living room. when he can see you from his safe spot, he'll probably decide that the couch looks pretty comfy too.

I have crates in the living room and soft ones in the bedroom for sleeping.

some good suggestions. Thanks. I'm sure we also just haven't given him enough time to adjust as it could take several months.
