Need recommendations on new brushes for small Sheltie

That's the brand . . . #1 All Systems pin brush. It was on Amazon and I have Prime so I get the quickie shipping. I really like the brush. The key is to make sure the pins don't have the tips and that the rubber pin pad is durable. The pins don't get pushed in on this brand that I have seen so far.

My comb says "Classic" on it and the logo CP. What I like the wide tines that are rounded (cylindrical as well as the tip rounded). Picked that up at a cat show in the 90's and it has lasted well.
 
I'm rereading this tread and coming up with a different answer. My first answer was far too complex.

First off....get rid of the rake immediately! They are not for everyone. And they can do more damage than good in the hands of someone not experienced.

You really only need three tools for brushing..

A greyhound comb
A soft slicker brush
A pin brush....there are differing opinions here, but I love my 35 mm oblong brush vs. the more traditional

Always groom by spritzing with water or water/conditioner. Never dry. Line brush. This is key.

Later when you get more experienced you can add other tools.. But this would be a good startr
 
For a beginner to the subtleties of brushing a sheltie the correct way, could you expand on the specific purposes of the slicker, gray hound comb, and pin brush?
 
My Favorite Grooming Brushes

In terms of brushing, there are two things that I use pretty much exclusively.

1. Slicker Brush - This is the most important grooming brush. Personally, I find that a soft one with softer bristles works best (the harder bristled ones just glide through the hair and don't remove anything). This is the one I have and LOVE.

2. CC #011 Staggered Tooth Butter Comb - This is like the greyhound comb that BarbV mentioned. This comb works wonders for removing loose hair, it was recommended to me by a groomer. Well worth the money.

As an optional brush, I also use this

3. CC 8 1/2" Wood Pin Brush (I have the Purple one with the groom grip handle, which is nice on the hands) - I use this mainly for finishing, but I also use it on my one sheltie Toby for removing loose hair because he is extremely sensitive to even the smallest amount of pulling and doesn't always tolerate the slicker. Its so gentle and seems to make their coats so shiny. The pups love it, especially Toby. They close their eyes when I use this brush. Also well worth the money, IMO. :smile2:
