Needed tools for a Sheltie?

I've groomed my Sheltie Maverick at home for his entire life and I've never really had a problem aside from when he was young. He has ever been to the groomers. I was taught my my aunt who was a professional groomer for many years as well as watched videos and such to educate myself. The reason I don't get my dogs groomed is because I find a complete lack of effort made by groomers that I've gone to, especially with my Miniature Australian Shepherd. Plus, its cheaper. :lol:
So I am just wondering if there are any tools I do not yet have and should use when grooming.
I have:
  • Slicker Brush
  • Regular hairbrush-type brush
  • Comb with a wider and thinner side
  • Curved scissors
  • Nail clippers
  • Curry comb
  • Straight scissors (which I need to replace!)

I know I should be using thinning shears and that I should be spritzing his coat before brushing, which I will be doing right away. But let me know if I am missing any Sheltie-specific items!
 
Oh, yes its called a pin brush... sorry I don't know all the terminology, haha. I will definitely look into getting those tools! They look super handy. My Maverick very rarely gets matts anymore and when he does I usually get them out easily.

I would also suggest a nail grinder. Once you clip the nails, they have sharp edges, and a grinder can help with that. They are available quite inexpensively in the AS SEEN ON TV section at Walmart.

Yes, the pin brush is fairly important. My favorite one just succumbed to rubber rot and they don't make the wood handled ones any more. :uhoh:

Thinning shears are helpful around the ears when they get a little too wild looking.
 
I've been grooming our shelties for 30 years and I would say your list is pretty complete. Maybe an undercoat rake for when they are shedding and thinning scissors for crazy ear hair would be a good addition.
 
The ere are brushes and then there are better brushes...

Same with all other tools.

- I really like a 35mm pin brush on Shelties....I also prefer an oblong shape rather than oval.

- I have two slickers....both of them are very soft. A teeny one for ears and a slightly larger one for the body.

- You definitely need thinning shears. Great for the pants and the ears

- Greyhound comb is good

- A rake for when their pants blow up!

- A small rounded tip set of scissors (you can buy at the pharmacy). I use for ears, feet, and uhhm penis.

- Dremmel for nail grinding...love it

- And my favourite tool....a ladies bikini shaver! I use it to trim the feet. Pads and around the toes, Awesome!
