Hello all! I am new here and found this forum by accident! I have a 1 1/2 year old male Sheltie named Joey. He is the love of my life, and a gorgeous sable I purchased from a wonderful breeder after I lost my beloved soul mate Golden Retreiver, Sunny. I have never had a small dog before. I have always loved HUGE dogs ever since I was a child. I am now 50, and decided I need a dog that I can walk...not one who can walk me! Also, my daughter has some motor problems, and can not handle a large dog. She always wanted a dog she could handle. After much research on breeds with the LEAST amount of health problems, and seeing a beautiful Sheltie that was rescued by someone I knew, we decided a Sheltie was the breed for us. We had to wait for a long time for the puppies to be born and ready to be weaned, but after Joey was born on Christmas Eve, we got him in mid February in the middle of an ice storm! We got him from a breeder that lived 9 hours away!...lol...my husband is a VERY understanding man, and since being married to me, loves animals as much as I do! Joey is well worth the wait and is so sweet and beautiful. He has been through basic training, and of course, like all other Shelties, VERY smart and loves to please. He was a HANDFUL as a baby though! Once he turned 1 year old, he seems to be settling down to the dream dog I hoped for!
I hope to get a lot of information from everyone here, and maybe even share a tip or two of my own!
Thanks!
Mindy(A.K.A.- Joey's Mom)

Welcome

Welcome Mindy and Joey-- I ahve a 6 year old Blue Merle named Shadow who is the love of my life. Sharon

Hi, Mindy! So great to have you with us. Joey sounds like a pure delight. Our furkids, Layla, Annie Laurie, and Bits are the dearest Shelties imaginable! We also have Dune, our Golden/Chow and Lassie, our ancient Collie. There's so much great information on the forum, and wonderful people generous enough who share it!

Welcome Mindy! Hope you like the group. There are a lot of funny people on here! I have 3 sheltie girls that we adopted over the course of the last year after we lost our Golden Retriever of 14 years! Like you I thought I would always be a big dog person. Once I got the first sheltie, I decided we needed another. Then the third one came along! My husband thinks we are starting our own sheltie rescue! Again, welcome to the group! Post some pics!!

Hi Joey's Mom :smile2:!

We have a similar story - losing our beloved flat-coated retriever, after deciding on a Sheltie waiting 5 months before we got one (false pregnancies etc.), travelling around 18 hours round-trip to pick up Tex our sable who is 7 months old now.

Trying to coordinate the pickup was an adventure on its own. We had a lot going on around Feb of this year between me travelling extensively for business, my kids being in school and lots of activities going on during the weekends. This all made the pickup planning a real headache. My wife was about to send me flying off up to Arkansas by myself one weekend on a Saturday or Sunday and bringing Tex back in a pet-tote on the plane. Instead we ended up making a long but fun road-trip with the entire family in tow meeting up with the breeder somewhere in Oklahoma!
