New Oral Flea med

I know. I should actually state that I am afraid of new things. I've had an extremely difficult 2 years. The hardest of my life. I'm terrified that if I use something new, and they have an issue with it, it will be my fault. And if I loose them, I really won't be able to handle that. But I see poor Clarabelle itching away like mad and I feel so helpless and worthless. I just feel like throwing my hands up and crawling under my desk and staying there. It's a big desk, the dogs would fit too.
Awwww, I'm sorry to hear that :-( I understand. But simparica really does have an excellent safety profile.

Flyer has a strange reaction to the topical flea treatment we got from Banfield. He runs away and hides after it is applied and acts like it is burning/hurting him. He is very wary of me for hours after. I discontinued using it because of this. I could not find evidence of his skin being inflamed, or anything. He has started itching so I'll be giving him a few capstars.

The Bug Off Garlic granules I've been giving the dogs smell so strong that i doubt they are getting much, if any, protection from that. Anyone else using that product, a food additive?

For many, many years ago when I had two German Shepherds I got my first and last flea infestation, I used Capstar and it was very effective, I could almost see the fleas fall off  :fl

As to the poster's question, i have to worry about anything that lasts 3 months. Remember Proheart 6? If your dog has a bad reaction to it, and its gonna be in his system for 3 months and you cant get it out, my spider sense as an old warhorse says 'pass'.

I'm not willing to put something that lasts 3 months or longer in me for exactly that same reason, no way I'm doing it to my dogs!

Honey started doing that with Vectra, so we stopped using it...she'd be fine for the first few months, and then anytime after when I'd apply she'd be squirming under things, pacing, skipping around....

Me too have you tried Nexgard?

We switched to Nexgard last year, and luckily, neither dogs have had any adverse reactions to it. I'm especially happy with how it's working on Honey, who reacts so strongly to any insect bite. This is the only summer we've had in which she hasn't pulled out all the hair on her belly and stomach scratching. Fingers crossed we'll be able to make it through without needing to shave it down!

That's exactly what happened to Spirit. She is now on Interceptor and Simparica and has had no problems since.

Of course it's your decision, but the reason that new medications are out there is that the tried and tested old things are not necessarily very effective. Just something to consider. The old products simply do not work in my area. My girls are on Simparica and Interceptor and have had absolutely no problems.

On the advice of my vet, I switched Hanna to Simparica & Heartguard this year as ticks are horrible out here (fleas are not an issue) - I've only pulled a few dead ones off her all summer ( none attached long enough to engorge). She thinks it's a treat - so much more effective that Advantix or Revolution.
