New to puppy potty training... HELP!!!

My puppy was ACCIDENT FREE today!!!! :biggrin2: he did have a lot of pent up energy today, i probably didnt let him run around long enough after potty breaks, but its kinda hard with a toddler too. but hey, its a start!!!

My fiance and I had been having problems with our boys peeing and pooping in the house too, and we didn't know what to do. It wasn't until our vet, and our trainer gave us a pretty good idea of what to do. They told us to teach them to go to the door when they need to go to the bathroom and ring the bell. And we've been doing that for the past 4 weeks, and we've had like 2 accidents in that span.

cool, thanks! we may just have to get one of these for him. he is starting to bark to let us know he needs to go out, but only when he is in his crate. the bell would be nice to have so maybe he wont bark quite as much.

just had to share.... HE PEED OUTSIDE!!!!! i took him out after he woke up this morning, but no luck, and fed him, took him back out, no luck. but when i took him out for the third time and he peed! i kept him in his crate inbetween like you guys said and only took him out for 5 minutes at a time then came back in for about 20 or so then back outside. well just had to share. we'll see how things go the rest of the day.

I am glad he went for you.

Be sure and "praise" him when he pees outside. Something like, Good Boy, pee-pee outside. I always make sure outside is said so Mally does not think
pee-pee is good inside! (same thing with "Good Boy", poo-poo outside). Be sure and praise him because shelties want to please their people! It's a win/win situation!

I think the bell is a good idea for some, but personally, I prefer to train my dogs to be camels. That is, hold it for long periods of time.

I didn't really do anything special to train them to this except put them on a pretty regular schedule. Over time, their bodies adapted to this.

They will generally only eliminate immediately after meals, twice per day. If they are outside more, then they will go more, but they really seem to need to.

I have not had an accident in 3 years. The boys are now 3.5 years old.

Good luck with your training.
