I thought I had a scare with this yesterday. The boys are typically not far from my ankles. Went to shower, Deacon didn't walk in to lick my legs and Brodie wasn't peaking in the door - I noticed but wasn't terribly concerned since our youngest was home and they often visit with him when upstairs. I got dressed, went down and the dogs didn't follow, looked around, hear them fighting over something upstairs. Our oldest was home this weekend, had a pint of almost eaten Halo Vanilla Bean ice cream with a scoop of peanut butter in it that he left on the nightstand and the dogs got into it. Must not have been much because you could see where it was dried up on the sides. I look at the ingredients and see Erythritol and my mind goes to Xylitol. I bring them downstairs, immediately dose them with hydrogen peroxide, call the vet, call Poison Control. In the meantime, I realize it's a sweetener yes, but not THAT sweetener.
Lady on the line at poison control was quite nice to me. She patiently waited for me to get paper towels when the dogs began to vomit, told me to withhold food and water for a bit - that folks often give water right after a dog throws up and you don't want to do that, you want to introduce it slowly after the belly has settled a bit or you can cause them to vomit more as their belly will be upset. She was also kind enough to not charge me the $85.00 fee which I didn't care about as much but that was a nice touch.
All kids got lectured AGAIN on no sugar free products in the home when they are around and to please be more aware of leaving things for the dogs to get into. They really are like perpetual 3 year olds and go through everything. Dogs were not thrilled with me over the loss of their stomach contents but I gave them green beans with their dinner to make up for it.
