The strongest part of a sheltie is in there throat,iow there bark bark bark bark bark bark. The more they use it the stronger and louder it gets. They don't need anything to bark at. They just like to BARK. I know the barking comes with this breed. Our first sheltie didn't bark this much,ever.

But I do think the barking will lessen when she gets out of her puppy stage and is allowed to be with us all the time. Now she still has to stay in the kitchen behind the puppy gate. All the molding in the kitchen will have to be replaced when she is done with it. She has so many chew toys that its hard to walk in there but she still likes the molding on the floor and around the doors. OH well I put it up and I can replace it.

She is not our first puppy but at my age (70) and how long shelties live she will be our last.
 
I thought shelties get worst at barking overtime no? =).

OUr sheltie is 5 months old and hasnt yet started to bark. I only hear her bark perhaps once a week. By bark I dont mean a constant BARK BARK WOOF WOOF for a long time. I just mean 1 bark hahaha. When she does I just sssssshhhshh her and its over. I hope she stays that way =).

I'd still be working on reducing her barking. At that age it's very much attention seeking, but you don't want it to become a habit. It's so easy for shelties to get into the habit of barking just because its fun. The best thing you can do is ignore her when she barks and give her attention only when she is quiet.

I'm going to move this thread into behaviour because I reckon there's a lot of sheltie owners who have gone through the same:wink2:

You've answered your own question to why she is barking. She is barking because shes a sheltie and wants to be with you. Being in the kitchen all the time must be frustrating for her. Having owned shelties in the past im sure you are aware they love to be with their people!! Being separated she just doenst understand and is communicating it in the only way she knows how!
 
I wouldn't give her the chance to rip up the molding. She should be contained in a place where she cannot chew up items.

My girls never chewed anything they should not have, because I never gave them a chance to. If I was not interacting with them or exercising them, they were in a puppy pen I had set up.

In regards to barking, it shouldn't be like that at all. Is she getting enough exercise? Mentally and physically?

Oh dear that's a somewhat sad comment, but I know what you mean. With Blue at 8 months and me at 74 I just hope I outlast him - who the heck would explain to him where I'd gone without permission:uhoh:

You can always foster with your local rescue. Some pups stay in rescues for a bit and it is very rewarding experience.
As for always barking have you considered more exercise and mental activities? Some classes, interactive toys, teaching them tricks, letting them run like a wind in a safe place....tired dog is good dog:yes:
Sure there are few poorly bred shelties with ton of issues, anxieties etc that all you can do is to get on meds to calm them down.
As for chewing on the wall- don't let your dog do it. Simple. Crate when you can not be with your dog, tie the leash to yourself around the house, supervise your dog like you would any toddler. Again, medical issues barring, should not be a problem.
 
Barking?

Good grief, Acres is 12 years old as of Feb 29th of this year and he barks more now then he ever did as a pup. The vet says he is losing his eye sight. That I don't believe because he will see someone walking/jogging on the street 200 yards away and will bark. He walks arround the apartment and will start barking just to bark. I will say something he looks at me and just walks off yapping away! You just have to love Shelties.:smile2:
