Older Dog Advice?

Tomorrow I go up to my Mom's for a belated Xmas dinner and an overnight stay, so I have to bring the boys with me.

My parents have a 13 year old lab mix, Sandy. Sandy is rather set in his ways and does NOT enjoy Indy and Bacca around at all. The last two visits were not particularly happy, with Sandy getting worse and worse as the visit wore on.

It's not that the boys are particularly "in his face", they mostly leave him alone, but he just gets so agitated and growly and grumpy if they even come to sniff him, that my Dad gets agitated and growly and grumpy.

Locking dogs up in bedrooms is not a great answer.

Any other suggestions? Maybe I should have the boys on a leash for the first while? Introduce them one at a time, and reward Sandy if he accepts a sniff?

doesn't sound like a lotta fun

I think the leash is the very best idea, in the beginning. THis way they don't breeze right into the house... then immediately have the Zoomies saying hello to everyone and then being rowdy right away and trying to take over the house with all their Sheltie cuteness :)
I mean of course the other dog (and Dad) would be agitated and grumpy and growly, if house gets taken over right away by TWO Shelties with too much cuteness and sweetness to handle, lol :)

Wish I was there to see it, I bet they are so much fun saying hello to everyone, and can't understand why another dog be so grumpy! lol, Poor Bacca and Indy they have so much Joie de vivre!!

Yep, you've totally nailed it! They go charging in....we're here, we're here! Let the bands play and the music flow! Love us, we love you! Hello, hello, hello everyone! Aren't we cute! Aren't we special! yadda, yadda!

Meanwhile, poor ol' Sandy goes into "who are these intruders and why have they taken over MY house!" mode.

Shutting the pups in a bedroom is no answer...they'll just bark their fool heads off!

So I think decorum and tact is the best approach. Agreed?

That's it... even though I'd hate to curb that, since I would go around being my excitable, high pitched voice self, being a wal-mart greeter and pouring myself a glass of wine all in the process... ! lol Gosh, we are like our little dogs, eh??

All joking aside, yes.. tact and decorum *yawn* would fix it I am confident. This way you can correct them BEFORE they make Sandy (and Dad) even more growly and cranky
