Olive has her HT, plus a leg towards PT!

PVSSC had two trials yesterday (plus two more today) at Keepstone Farm. Since Olive is still adjusting to it suddenly being summer (May was pretty much Winter Part II for the DC Metro) we stuck one HT run and took a shot at PT.

HT was pretty non-eventful. Olive had fun, had nice changes of direction, and engaged almost right from the start (something we sometimes have problems with in lessons.) The judge told me I should stop obedience training with her, she's a thinker and training her to be perfect would ruin that. Olive's on board with that plan, she'd love for me to stop asking her to actually return the dumbell after I throw it. There was a really nice working GSD in the class. DH and I agreed if it was actually judged, he would have won. Also, his huge ears were adorable.

Olive chilling (literally) between classes

PT... I think the judge was a little lenient. It was our first time really trying PT. We practiced a bit before but the only time we went in the PT ring at Keepstone was just to get Olive thinking before going to the HT field, the sheep were too light for where she is experience-wise. Well, yesterday we got fast sheep who really wanted to return to the pen. Poor Olive's little legs and my asthma+seasonal allergies meant we were huffing and puffing by the end. But we did it! Barely, but we did it. We have two more runs at the SSCGB trial in July. Next time, we'll work on Olive's conditioning more and I'll bringing my running shoes (and inhaler... I was sidelined today as my airways are still protesting.)

It'll be fun!!

I did an AHBA trial at Keepstone last weekend. We had like 4 days of hot before this trial, after months of cold. I left my dogs out "under the house" for a few days to get them acclimated to the heat. We do take staying cool very seriously at the July trial, especially since one of our judges is 80+. Lots of cooling tubs, I have two giant water coolers, etc. Even if she hates it, her *** goes in a tub and her belly gets wet after she works, it's not optional. Jase is not a fan, but after working for 15 solid minutes in the heat last weekend, his whole body got wet. I'm not having a dog stroke out.

I had a conference in DC during that weekend- it was miserable for the locals. The week before I was wearing sweaters to the main DC office, that week it was sleeveless shells and wondering if shorts can pass as conference attire.

Several dogs took advantage of a tank Susan had partially filled near the PT in-gate, they were very pleased with themselves. Olive got the wet cooling sheet before and after her runs.

I'm planning out what we pack for the July trial better:
More water, lots more water (3 32 oz were definitely not enough)
Keep the wet cooling sheet for Olive and sunshirt for me (I don't care if it has long sleeves, less chance of skin cancer AND it's cooler than the cotton beefy tees most people wear)
Sneakers instead of boots
Ripstop long shorts instead of jeans
Crate Fan and chill paks
Make DH actually wear a hat and sunscreen
Switch out the crate pad for something cooler

Olive has recovered faster than me, she slept yesterday and is now acting mopey when I don't reach for my sneakers when going outside, so at least she's okay.
