Overprotective/jealous dog

Wow! I was gone 5 days with my hubby and since then my Zorro has been even more overprotective of me. Not only does he barks but he has started lunging at my hubby if he gets too close. What do I do? I have never had a dog do this. He is 16 months old. I have tried to calm him as I used to think he was afraid of my hubby. Now I see he is just jealous!
 
You have to show your Pup that you are the boss and in charge. I have a friend who is going through the same things with a rescue cattle dog. She went to a trainer, and was basically told that her dog doesn't get to be on furniture, go through doors first, or do anything that places him in a dominant position. Good Luck!
 
Cindy - So sorry to say it, this must be a very old-fashioned trainer, all these things were something one thought 10-15 years ago.

There are made so much research, written many articles specifically about this, and this proves that it is a big misunderstanding.
 
Sounds like he didn't cope well with your absence, his anxiety levels got a bit high and he may be channeling the stress at your husband.

My suggestion would be to get into a fixed routine, dogs love routine. Try to get in some good long walks, if the weather doesn't let you then play chase or ball around the house. Exercise helps kick in the good endorphins. But I think most importantly, all food should come through your husband. Have your husband give your Sheltie's meals, and get your hubby to keep treats in his pocket so he becomes a walking treat dispenser.
 
I love the food going through my husband. Hubby has bad knee so I am always the one who walks him. We go 3 miles everyday. We also have a pretty good routine going but I think the food is the ticket!
